Ohio State didn’t seem to breathe properly ever since they lifted the trophy. The mass exodus both in the roster and in the coaching room wreaked havoc on head coach Ryan Day‘s 2025 hope. The absence of Will Howard, Jim Knowles, and Chip Kelly quickly cast a doubt on the Buckeyes’ ability to retain their defending champion standard. Once it settled down with a few transfers, analysts started to sneak a peek at their chance to win the massive Texas game in the mid-season. With all said and done, there comes the most critical fanbase of college football, which made things as awkward as a cow on crutches for the Buckeyes every single time. Quite unsurprisingly, they didn’t miss taking note of another ‘oops’ moment for the Buckeyes at the White House today.

While the post-title winning phase brought a lot of embracement for the Buckeyes, it was even worse before they won one. Starting from the gut-wrenching Michigan loss to people dishing out death threats to the head coach, Ryan Day’s way to redemption was all but a cakewalk. He worked on the drawbacks and bounced back stronger. The Buckeyes ended the season like a phoenix with four straight games, including the January 20 title contest, in the first expanded 12-team College Football Playoff, and they brought the coveted prize home. The pride the trophy it carries remains the focal point of their grind throughout the season.

To celebrate that honor once again, the Buckeyes football team visited the White House on April 14. The soul-satisfying 34-23 national championship win over Notre Dame was all in the spotlight until a nasty fumble took it back: Vice President JD Vance dropped the trophy as he went to lift it up.

The former Ohio State graduate tried to cover it up with a piece of humor. He justified that he tried to break the trophy so that no one could get it after the Buckeyes. But netizens hardly cared about his joke and called him out on Twitter as vehemently as you can paint up.

Ohio State fans left in a frenzy following awful moment at the White House

It’s not the first time fans have rallied against JD Vance on the internet. After the heartbreaking Michigan loss, the proud Buckeyes alumna penned an empathetic message for all the players and fans. He asked them to keep their chins up as they have performed like champions throughout the season. Michigan fans didn’t take long to come to the comments to taunt him. Some called him out for being childish and throwing a post-loss tantrum. But nothing hit harder than turning a laughing stock of your alma mater’s fan base.

One fan had had enough of the humiliating accident and wrote, “Should not have tried to pick it up. Probably been beat the hell out of the last few months, lol.” While it’s pretty clear that the disrespect was not intentional, fans argued that he should have been a bit less clumsy while approaching the champions on the national stage.

What’s your perspective on:

Did JD Vance's trophy fumble overshadow Ohio State's hard-earned victory, or is it just a blip?

Have an interesting take?

Just imagine the hilarious contrast of the moment! With a band playing the iconic ‘We Are the Champions’ in the background, the vibe is all set, and Vance messed it up while hoisting the cup! Fans couldn’t and shouldn’t want to let it go. One of them asked him to behave: “Bruh, get that s— out of his hands.”

It seems that JD broke the trophy more seamlessly than Day broke down under pressure in some of their stickiest matches in the season. “Looks like bro broke it and dropped it. This guy is an embarrassment,” a fan vented out frustration in the comment. The awkward gasps and the nervous humor spread on Twitter from the White House crowd in a jiffy.

The championship game occurred on January 20, the same day as President Donald Trump’s inauguration. So Vance couldn’t attend the game to prioritize the political festivities. However, President Trump assured that he would be there in the White House during the traditional celebration. But little did he know that it could turn out to be a disaster like nobody ever imagined.
