In shocking news for Mizzou Nation, star RB Ahmad Hardy, who led the SEC in rushing in 2025 and is a projected first-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, sustained a single gunshot wound. Although he is recovering after successful surgery, the seriousness of the wounds still raises concerns, as there is no indication of where in the body he was struck. The program released a statement on Monday.

“Mizzou Football student-athlete Ahmad Hardy was the victim of a shooting at a concert in Mississippi early Sunday morning and sustained a gunshot wound,” read the statement. “Ahmad underwent surgery Sunday in Mississippi and is in stable condition. Ahmad is deeply loved by his teammates, coaches, friends, family, and fans.
We will continue to stand beside him and his family through this difficult time, offering our love, prayers, strength, and support. A timeline for his return to football activities is unknown at this time. Mizzou Athletics will provide more information on his status when it becomes available.”
The altercation occurred at a concert in his home state of Mississippi, and Hardy underwent surgery shortly after. While he is recovering and is currently in stable condition after sustaining the gunshot wound, there is currently no timetable for his return to football activities. But there is a genuine belief that Hardy can return to the gridiron, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Following his surgery on Sunday, Ahmad Hardy is currently “alert and moving around.” He enters his junior year as one of the most high-profile players in the country after a breakout sophomore campaign, where he led the SEC in rushing with 1,649 yards and 16 TDs. He was also a Doak Walker Award finalist. However, the RB’s connection to the Tigers is at another level, as he is a Mississippi native.
“I’m from Mississippi,” said Hardy after delivering a historic performance against Mississippi State in 2025, rushing for 300 yards and three TDs in a 49–27 victory. “A lot of teams didn’t recruit me coming out of high school, so it was kind of personal. But then, again, like I told the guys, the seniors, I was doing it for them.”
With that, the Missouri RB became only the sixth player in SEC history to reach the 300-yard rushing mark in a single game. Moreover, his performance was a “safety blanket” for true freshman QB Matt Zollers, who was making his second career start. However, the RB started his collegiate career at Louisiana-Monroe, where he was the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year after rushing for 1,351 yards. Last season, he transferred to Missouri and became a consensus All-American.
Beyond his performance, Ahmad Hardy’s leadership and mentorship were a major storyline this spring.
Ahmad Hardy’s loyalty to Mizzou
The star RB’s decision to stay at Missouri in 2026, despite significant NIL offers from other programs, sent a powerful message to his teammates about his commitment. For Hardy, “Mizzou is a brotherhood,” and he prioritized teaching new arrivals how to play together and build confidence before even focusing on football.
Eli Drinkwitz noted that Hardy’s leadership even extended to teaching his teammates to ride horses. “For us at the running back position, Jamal Roberts, Mr. Dependable. Ahmad Hardy comes along, teaches his teammates how to ride a horse,” said Drinkwitz.
The Missouri head coach highlighted Ahmad Hardy’s unselfishness, noting that despite his superstar status, he took on a “mentor” role for younger players like Jamal Robert. Then, he praised Hardy for understanding that “to whom much is given, much is required,” noting his improved nutrition and sleep habits as an example for the team.
