Memorial Day marks the sacrifice, honor, and valor of fallen US heroes who dedicated their lives to the country. Across America, people are finding meaningful ways, both big and small, to honor these heroes. From quiet family tributes to public ceremonies, the spirit of remembrance is alive. And in the world of college football, a spirit deeply rooted in tradition joins in the chorus of gratitude. Some of the most recognisable names in the sport, like Kirk Herbstreit, are sending in their messages.
Kirk Herbstreit is known for his eloquence. On Memorial Day, he sent some thoughtful words to the families of war heroes. He shared a photo of a soldier placing a flag on the grave of another, and wrote, “Memorial Day ‘a day on which those who died in active military service are remembered, traditionally observed on May 30 but now officially observed on the last Monday in May.’ Just grateful for the many who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. God bless and thank you 🙏🏼”

CFB blue bloods and other influential figures from the sport are using their positions to attract more attention on this important day. Alabama football took to their X handle to mark the event. “In remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.” They shared a picture of combat boots decorated with tags and American flags–the insignia of the US armed forces. The program’s veteran coach’s family also stepped in to join their call. Nick Saban’s daughter, Kristen Saban, shared a simple yet powerful message on her Instagram story. It was an image of white stars on a navy background that read, “In remembrance and honor.”
Kirk Herbstreit was also joined by fellow ESPN presenter and former NFLer Tim Tebow. He shared a picture that read, “Today, we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives for our freedom. Their sacrifice is a powerful reminder of courage, love, and what it means to serve. We’re so grateful – and we’ll never take it for granted.” Tebow took that message further up a notch by adding, “Today and every day.”

Notre Dame pays Tribute on Memorial Day
Further up the country, Notre Dame shared its heartfelt tribute on X. “Today, we honor and mourn members of our armed forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice serving our country.“ The college shares a deep history with the armed forces. Multiple Fighting Irish athletes also sacrificed their lives for the country. One of them was Lieutenant Jack Chevigny, who scored a vital touchdown and screamed, “That one was for the Gipper,” in the infamous ‘Win One for the Gipper’ game against the Army in 1928 in Yankee Stadium.
HC Marcus Freeman also had a note for the ultimate sacrifice laid down by the forces. He shared a post from the program’s official account that read, “On this Memorial Day, we remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice 💚🇺🇸.” Notre Dame has a very strong connection with the military, despite their football rivalries with the Army and Navy.
