This offseason, RB Dante Dowdell suffered an ATV accident, and now the Georgia RB is hospitalized with serious injuries. The incident happened near his home, as per the report, though the exact time and details about it are undisclosed. But Georgia head coach Kirby Smart gave an update on Dowdell at SEC Media Days.

“He’s injured,” said Smart, as reported by ESPN College Football on July 21. “We don’t know when his return will be. I don’t know the specifics of it, to be honest with you. It was a recreational vehicle, and he had some serious injuries.”

“He’s out of the really tough range, but as far as his complete health and coming all the way back, I don’t know what that looks like in terms of this year,” added the Georgia head coach.

Smart also mentioned that Dowdell is hospitalized at Shepherd Center in Atlanta. However, the RB’s injuries are still uncovered, and the coach has not even cited anything about that. The RB transferred this season from Kentucky to play a crucial role in Georgia’s backfield; now his return to the field is uncertain.

Before the accident, he played with the Bulldogs in the 2026 spring practices, and his G-Day performance was outstanding with 6 carries for 61 yards. That led Georgia to believe their bet on Dowdell paid off. The concern was given to his portal move. In his four seasons in college, Kirby Smart’s program is his fourth school.

Before choosing the Wildcats, the RB spent time at Nebraska for a single season. Two years ago, he rushed 614 yards for the Cornhuskers as a sophomore. Prior to that, with the Ducks, he recorded 17 carries as a freshman. Then, last season at UK, his production was huge with 560 yards and three touchdowns. With this kind of talent on display, his arrival definitely helps Georgia to chase a title run. But that plan is now unattainable, and the school prays for Dowdell’s well-being.

“”We’re praying for him and his family. We expect a full recovery, but the outlook right now is we’re waiting to see,” said Smart. “He’s [Dante Dowdell] just a tremendous kid [with a] great family. We’re very supportive of them. Our players have been up there to see him. It’s a really tough deal.”

For Georgia going forward without the RB can hurt

Georgia isn’t short on talent at RB in 2026. The Bulldogs have returning pieces in Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowens. And after adding a portal talent like Dante Dowdell in the room, Georgia wasn’t worried about their running game.

“He [Dowdell] brings energy, toughness, size, speed,” said Smart after Georgia’s annual spring game, praising the transfer RB. “You saw him out there today. He flashes with some really good toughness and had some flashy runs. You can’t have enough backs in the SEC, and I thought he did a good job with the opportunities he got. He’s a great kid to be around, and he’s blended in that room and worked really hard.”

But now, after Dowdell’s serious injury, the RB depth has become thin. Georgia brought in the ex-Kentucky RB to play as a backup behind the 2025 leading rusher. Now if their two returning RBs fall short, the third key option is missing. Yet, hope for the best.
