Cam Skattebo’s health situation with the Giants quickly got the attention of his former team. The topic was raised in ASU’s weekly press conference as Kenny Dillingham got super busy discussing strategy ahead of the Iowa State game, as their recent 24-16 loss against Houston remains fresh. However, the moment of pain came when someone asked Dillingham about Skattebo’s health update. Skattebo had a blazing start to his rookie season with the New York Giants after shining at ASU. But sadly, he suffered a gruesome ankle dislocation in a game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Doctors confirmed that the injury would end his season. That’s why the reporters wanted to take the viewpoint of Skattebo’s former coach, Dillingham, and know about the situation. “I called Scat. He didn’t answer, and then he called back, and I didn’t have my phone, and then he went into surgery. And then we exchanged some conversation this morning. I’m not going to go into that, but really sad deal,” Dillingham informed during the conference. “That dude’s just worked his butt off his entire life to get to where he’s at.”
Dillingham continues, “But it’s a great example of if you treat people well, regardless of how he rehabs in and regardless of his future, he’s going to be successful based on how he treated people, the passion he played, the game through football in 10 years, and 15 years. That dude has built a brand for himself that’s sustainable. And it’s unfortunate what happened to him, but his success in life is still going to be there.” A review like that shows a great deal of how much Skattebo meant to Dillingham and the Sun Devils. Cam Skattebo came to ASU as a talented, under-the-radar back who quickly made a name for himself.

Skattebo played two years with the Sun Devils, finishing up with 2494 yards with 30 touchdowns as a rusher. Last year, in a game against Mississippi State, Skattebo rushed for 262 yards and sealed the victory with a 39-yard run. That performance earned him the AP National Player of the Week, among other honors. But it was his performance in the 2025 Peach Bowl against Texas that truly defined his college career. Skattebo racked up 271 yards overall, including two rushing touchdowns, and set a new ASU record for touchdowns from scrimmage. In 2024, he earned First-Team All-Big 12 honors and even finished fifth in the Heisman voting.

Skattebo had become the face of the program, guiding the team from a rough 3–9 season all the way to a conference title and a spot in the College Football Playoff. And that’s why ASU’s RB coach, Shaun Aguano, never gets tired of singing his praises. “You know the catch that he made at Texas when his helmet came off, and so I mean there’s so many to think of,” Aguano said. “But he was a dynamic player.” It’s sad to see a player of his caliber going through a stage like that. Against the Eagles, the tackle was so hard that his right foot was literally facing the wrong way.
The injury happened mid-second quarter when Skattebo caught a pass and was brought down by Eagles linebacker Zack Baun. Medical staff rushed in as Skattebo lay on the field in pain. After painstaking treatment, he was carted off with his foot in an air cast. And even while going to the sidelines, Skattebo managed a trademark headbutt with rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, but the situation required immediate surgery. That’s why Skattebo stayed in Philadelphia for the procedure, which his coach Brian Daboll described as “all went well.” Unfortunately, the injury ended his rookie season prematurely.
