One thing will never change with Coach Prime. He’ll always be surrounded by football royalty. During his time in Boulder, we’ve seen several of them visit and discuss their crafts with the Colorado players. Now, Deion Sanders wants a two-time Super Bowl winner to do the same to help his secondary.

Former New England CB Asante Samuel has had several altercations concerning Deion Sanders. In one rendition, he even went on a rant on X to prove that he’s better than the greatest CB that football has seen. However, things are calmer between the two now. So, when Samuel posted, “I know I’m a m- on this app. I love it,” Coach Prime jumped with an inviate. Sanders revealed he’d already told his Colorado DBs about Samuel and that he wants him in Boulder to teach the famous T-Step personally.
“I told my CBs about you the other day and that [you] will see them in person to elaborate on the T-Step. If I’m gonna allow them to do it, I’m bringing in the best that did it,” Deion wrote.

For those wondering, the T-step is all about fast transitions. It’s a high-speed footwork move used by DBs to flip from a backpedal into a forward sprint. The player plants the back foot at a sharp angle, forming a “T” with the front foot, quickly rotating the hips and exploding toward the ball. The goal is to change direction with balance and accelerate without losing control. Samuel built much of his career on that exact movement, using it to jump routes and close space in a hurry.
And Asante Samuel making a trip to Boulder would be a massive bonus. Samuel finished his NFL career with 51 interceptions, led the league twice in picks, earned Pro Bowl honors, and built a reputation as one of football’s premier ball hawks during stints with the Patriots, Eagles, and Falcons.

The timing sits perfectly, too. Colorado’s secondary has gone through a serious shakeup this offseason after losing DJ McKinney, Isaiah Hardge, Tyrecus Davis, and Noah King to the transfer portal. Those exits raised serious concerns about depth and stability heading into the season.
But Sanders went into full rebuild mode. He attacked the portal, bringing in Notre Dame’s Cree Thomas, Indiana’s Jah Jah Boyd, and James Madison’s Justin Eaglin, all players who offer both experience and multiple years of eligibility.

On top of that, Colorado finalized its coaching tree, with Aaron Fletcher set to handle CBs and former CB coach Kevin Mathis to oversee the nickel group. But even with a new staff in place, Sanders is still leaning on voices outside the building and that’s exactly where the T-step story comes full circle.
Deion Sanders once mocked the T-step
Deion Sanders once called the T-step “stupid” on live TV and now he wants the man who mastered it standing in his meeting room. During last year’s Big 12 Pro Day bash, Coach Prime went viral after clowning the technique on NFL Network.

“Let me teach you real quick how stupid the T-step is,” Sanders said while showing the move, even joking that he’d rip off his players’ facemasks if they tried it. That didn’t sit well with Asante Samuel, who fired back online, calling Deion’s take “foolishness” and insisting the T-step is “the best technique to get to the football.”
What followed was a loud, very public back-and-forth exchange between two elite corners. Samuel doubled down, pointing to his resume and production.

“Once again do not listen to this foolishness… of course he never learned how to T-Step his athletic ability was on another for his time. T-Step is the best technique to get to the football, not running out of the break. This is comedy,” he posted, later adding, “I can’t stop laughing how foolish he sounds. You can’t control everything sir. The first thing a cornerback is taught, never run out of breaks… Sooooo T-Step is the perfect technique.”

And honestly, Samuel had numbers to back it up. He finished his career with 51 interceptions, 164 pass breakups in 133 games, and helped win two Super Bowls. Sanders, of course, wasn’t exactly short on credentials either, recording 53 picks of in his era. Eventually, the two moved on, with Coach Prime admitting he reached out first.
“I want him to win in every facet,” Deion said. The beef ended. And now and here we are with Deion publicly inviting Samuel to Boulder. What started as a heated argument on social media has turned into a potential mentorship moment, and for Colorado’s young corners, that might be the biggest win of all.
