Desperate times need desperate measures, and that is what is happening in the Colorado locker room. The Buffs are 2-2 in a make-or-break season for Coach Prime. In their Week 4 game against Baylor, Deion Sanders benched his starting QB (Julian Lewis) for Isaac Wilson. Ahead of Colorado’s Week 5 game, Sanders also announced that Wilson will start against Texas Tech, a decision that drew public comments from a member of Lewis’ family.

Dr. Erin Wilson, Julian Lewis’s aunt, took to X to express her displeasure with Coach Prime’s treatment of her nephew. Responding to Deion Sanders’ September 29 press conference in which he announced the new starter, Wilson wrote, “This man is a character lol smh.”
But the comments didn’t stop there. She also agreed with an X user who replied to her tweet, saying, “Prime u going out sad gang.” Another user called the press conference “ridiculous.” Wilson responded, “Nothing surprises me anymore.”
Wilson’s comment section wasn’t limited to JuJu or Colorado fans. Some FSU fans also chimed in. One said, “And to think some people who called themselves Seminoles want him [Deion Sanders] in Tallahassee.” Again, JuJu’s aunt fired a shot at the Colorado head coach. She said, “Never.”
Interestingly, Wilson’s son and JuJu’s cousin, Antonio Cromartie Jr., is currently a DB at Florida State under Mike Norvell. Wilson is herself an FSU alum, the same as Coach Prime.
The tweets have been taken down since they were posted on October 1. BuffsHerd, an X account of a Colorado fan, shared the screenshots.
While Julian Lewis didn’t start the 2026 season on a high note against Georgia Tech, he still capped it off with an impressive touchdown drive to seal an away win. He followed that late momentum with an impressive performance against Weber State. However, the last two outings have been rough.
Lewis struggled against Northwestern in a 41-7 loss. He completed 19 of his 29 passes for 168 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. The coaching staff finally made the decision to look at other options against Baylor.
Coach Prime benched Lewis at halftime during Colorado’s 23-13 loss to Baylor after Lewis managed just 75 passing yards and had three sacks. His replacement, Isaac Wilson, scored a touchdown and threw for 156 yards. Deion Sanders’ reasoning was simple: the offense needed momentum.
“We gotta score, man. We have to score,” Deion Sanders said on BuffsTV. “That’s the whole thing. That’s the whole thing. It’s not about feelings or emotions or anything but that.”
While this marks his first official start for the Colorado Buffaloes, Wilson is not entirely new to the pressures of a starting job. As a true freshman at Utah in 2024, the younger brother of NFL quarterback Zach Wilson started 9 games, throwing for 1,510 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Coach Prime noted that the team rallied behind him.
“I haven’t talked to JuJu. I’ve talked to Isaac. The kid is excited about the possibilities,” Sanders said as reported by ESPN on September 29. “He stood up in the meeting and really talked to the team about this and that and challenged them in many ways. So I’m proud of the young man; I really am.”
Isaac Wilson will be tested against Texas Tech on October 3. It won’t be easy, as the Red Raiders are off to an undefeated 4–0 start. They entered the season as the media favorite to win the Big 12 title. Head coach Joey McGuire has his program firmly positioned as a primary College Football Playoff contender from the conference.
