Is DJ Lagway going to be one of those players who are defined by their injuries? We’re late into spring ball, and Lagway has yet to throw some serious balls at practice. Time and again, Lagway’s injury is all we’re getting to hear about. The man was a crucial piece that led Florida to its 8-5 score. He’s made a nice 1,915 yards with just 7 starts in one season. Fans wouldn’t want to see anything short of that this season. But when is Lagway truly going to come back to his full form? Or is he likely headed for something much worse?

Lagway has some flaws that have become prominent in the seven games he played. In the Gasparilla Bowl, where Florida pummeled Tulane to a defeat, the star QB made quite a few mistakes. But there were also some flashes of the Lagway show. After a bumpy first half, he threw for 305 yards and a touchdown. In fact, a key reason why Florida was able to finish with that number in the season was because Lagway turned its face around from a 3-3 start. And now, as he continues to nurse his injury, worries are starting to creep in further for fans.

Billy Napier has a good update about Lagway. He told the media recently, “DJ’s doing great.” “He’ll start throwing here in a couple weeks. Just in general, very positive there. The lower-body stuff was good, and I think we’re working on just kind of getting him in position for the next step. But, in general, there are a lot of positives; everything’s on schedule.” Now, this comes after Lagway continued to be a limited presence at spring ball. In Saturday’s annual spring game, the star QB was restricted to handoffs. If according to Napier, he’s “doing great,” why are we still not getting that vibe from Lagway’s field presence?

In an April 13 episode, That SEC Football Podcast’s Mike Bratton thinks that Napier might not be giving us the whole picture. “I have heard that there is a growing concern that DJ Lagway is going to miss some time and may not even play this season,” Bratton said. His sources apparently dismissed Napier’s claims about Lagway’s progress. He said, “I reached out to a ton of people to try to verify all this, and they said that’s complete horse****, what Billy Napier said.”

“They’re being so vague about it, right? No one’s got details. No one knows exactly what’s wrong with him,” Bratton added. It’s been more than a month since the Gators started spring practice. Lagway has yet to make his first solid throw in front of the media and the spectators.

Bratton also raised an even more concerning aspect. “He has an injury right now that he has suffered previously in high school. And it’s not been corrected with surgery,” he said. Should Lagway choose to get the surgery, Bratton fears it may “[knock] him out for the entire season.”

What’s your perspective on:

Is DJ Lagway's injury the real deal, or is Florida hiding something bigger from us?

Have an interesting take?

“He could have it and still come back, but he’ll probably still miss some of the season,” the host said. Also, if this situation does play out, Bratton predicts a dismal 4-8 score for Florida Gators, minus DJ Lagway. Billy Napier seems hopeful about Lagway, who is predicted by many to come back at least by June. Whatever it may be, the duo has to do a lot in very little time to prove us all wrong. As he continues to be plagued by his star QB’s injury, he has some great news from the WR room to look up to.

Billy Napier’s future star could be a rising WR

While concerns about Lagway continue to grow, a 2,424-yard talent has been creating a storm in Gainesville. We’re talking about the Gators WR Dallas Wilson. He is Napier’s biggest steal in the 2025 class, having poached him from Dan Lanning. And he’s showing his might. He caught 10 passes for 105 yards and also got to the end zone twice in the spring game. Napier said that he looked every bit of the five-star player that he was touted to be.

Wilson is a great, great talent, according to Napier. I think the toughness that he showed in practice; I’ve been impressed with his football intelligence, how he’s been able to retain information, and obviously, you don’t produce like that today unless you’ve been really working hard.” The numbers Wilson pitched in are a Florida record for a spring game. With an already strong-looking WR room and Dallas Wilson’s fiery game, Napier’s offense looks like the real deal.

However, the WRs have to have a dependable QB in Lagway. If he is still unavailable in the coming weeks, there’s a serious reason to worry for Billy Napier. As the staff continues to give us more hopeful news on Lagway, speculations about a Florida season without him are emerging from the back seat.
