“You can’t be a great defensive team if you can’t finish it, and they do a great job of not only getting into the offensive boards, but they rebound the ball” said Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball team head coach Rick Barnes after his team’s 69-50 loss against the Houston Cougars in the Elite Eight. Barnes was right to be in praise of the Cougars’ defense, as the game boasted three of the four Naismith Defensive Player of the Year finalists. In the end, it was the defense led by Joseph Tugler that diminished Tennessee’s scoring.
The 9 rebounds he recorded against Barnes’ squad weren’t even his most impressive, as he had recorded 11 rebounds two games ago, against the Gonzaga Bulldogs. His contributions have allowed the Cougars to enter the Final Four for only the 2nd time since 1984.
Given his standing within Kelvin Sampson’s team, several basketball fans would have been impressed with Joseph Tugler’s playing style. However, not many of them would actually know about the player’s personal life. Therefore, there is no better time than now to enlighten them.

Who is Brenda Tuglar?
Joseph Tugler was born in Monroe, Louisiana, on May 16th, 2005, to Brenda Tugler. No information is available in the public domain about Joseph’s father, indicating that he wasn’t a part of his son’s life growing up. This means that Brenda took up the sole responsibility of raising the future college basketball player, and his twin sisters, Alexar and Elexar.
There is no information available about any occupation Brenda took up in an attempt to raise her children. According to ‘Pro Football & Sports Network’, however, she has been linked to Carroll High School. Her connection to the education sector, therefore, reportedly suggests that Brenda was involved either in academics or community.

How has Joseph Tuglar’s family been his biggest supporter?
Even though she might have raised Joseph Tugler by herself, Brenda ensured that she would stand as a pillar of support for her boy. According to reports, the Tugler family moved from Monroe, Louisiana, to Houston, during Joseph’s middle school years. It was a transition that significantly shaped the future star’s basketball career.
Along with balancing work responsibilities, Brenda remained a constant source of support by taking time out to attend his games, and provide emotional and moral backing that any young athlete would need. Her encouragement reportedly helped to shape Joseph’s disciplined approach to basketball.

Therefore, the next time you see the player dominating on the defensive front, or simply being a team player, remember where he got the mindset to do so.

Brenda Tuglar didn’t just motivate her son to excel well on the basketball court. The lessons she taught also influenced Alexar and Elexar. It is the reason why both of them were also able to play at the collegiate level. Between 2011 and 2014, Alexar Tugler played 11 games for Louisiana-Monroe.

She averaged 11.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.5 assists during that period. Meanwhile, Elexar Tugler played the same number of games, within the same time period, for the same team. However, she managed to average only 7.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.8 assists.
Joseph Tugler would provide the ultimate gift to his mother if he can ever help the Houston Cougars win an NCAA Championship. Having made the Final Four this year, the chance is ripe for the player and his squad now more than ever.
