It’s just a week in and the big teams are taking a big hit. The AP’s top two teams – Angel Reese’s LSU and Azzi Fudd’s UConn – had a significant defeat. Last night, the North Carolina State Wolfpack took the upper hand with a 64-59 win over the UConn Huskies. Significantly, it was NC State’s first win over UConn since 1998, when the Wolfpack beat the Huskies in the 98 Elite Eight.

This defeat turned into a big upset as UConn holds a historical dominance because of its consecutive Final Four appearances. Moreover, this historical presence was the reason for the expectations tied to their anticipated win. Even though the Reynolds Coliseum echoed with the loud energy of fans brought to watch the Huskies, there are some reasons behind this unexpected loss.

What went wrong for UConn?

UConn has been facing a significant setback because of the wrist injury of forward Dorka Juhasz. This injury ended the season for her at an early stage, leaving the Huskies high and dry in many ways. On the other hand, making a recovering comeback after more than 500 days, Paige Bueckers played an impressive game by scoring 27 points and, 10-out-of-15 field shootings. But, this didn’t contribute to leading UConn to a win.

Notably, if the Huskies had played on their home court, they would have been able to get a win as the venue was at a distance of about two hours south in Bridgeport’s Total Mortgage Arena.

Angel Reese’s team lost to Colorado

It was the second day of the opening season, and the number 1 team on AP’s list, the LSU Lady Tigers took a horrendous punch down by the number 20, the Colorado Buffaloes. Evidently, it’s the first time a top team has faced a loss since 1995-96 when UConn was put down by Louisiana Tech. It was also the first time the previous season’s NCAA title winners lost their first game.

In their NCAA opener, Mikalyah led the Tigers with 17 points, with Bayou Barbie Angel Reese hooping 15 points and 12 rebounds, Sa’Myah Smith putting in 16 points, and fresh recruit Haley Van Lith scoring 14 points.

On the other hand, Colorado’s Frida Formann hooped 27 points, plus 24 points added by Aaronette Vonleh, contributing to the team’s win.
