After a week of no significant changes in the top 5 of the AP Top 25 list, we finally get to see a major shift in this week’s poll. Former number 1 Tennessee dropped down five places after their blowout defeat against Florida, who were the eighth-ranked team last week.

As a result, we have a new number-one-ranked team. The Auburn Tigers are the new leader in the recently published AP Men’s Basketball Top 25. Behind the Tigers, Iowa State, Duke, Alabama, and Florida all climbed at least one position, with the Gators making a three-spot jump to break into the top five.

With Johni Broome out for the foreseeable future, Auburn faces an uphill task of cementing its place as the top-ranked team. This week’s poll also shows Dan Hurley’s UConn Huskies drop down five places to 14th. To make matters worse, the two-time national champions will be without their star freshman Liam McNeeley for the foreseeable future.

Tough week ahead for Dan Hurley and Bruce Pearl

Despite getting number 1 for only the second time in the program’s history, Bruce Pearl knows he has no time to rest. The Tigers will be without, arguably the best player in the league, Johni Broome. The front-runner for the Naismith College Player of the year has no fixed return. Bruce Pearl confirmed its a ”significant sprain” in his ankle and he will be out for the foreseeable future. With matches coming up against Mississippi, Georgi,a and Tennessee, Pearl needs to come up with something extremely special out of his playbook if the Tigers are going to stand a chance of defending their first spot.

Dan Hurley’s UConn made a significant push last week, climbing up to the top 10 for the first time in a long time thanks to their 8-match winning streak. But since then, Dan Hurley’s highfliers lost to Villanova and followed it up with a win against Georgetown. This 1-1 record for the week meant that UConn joined Tennessee in being the only two teams this week to get a 5-place drop. Without star Liam McNeeley in their ranks, UConn will have a tough time to make a comeback again inside the top 10 spots.

The strength of the South Eastern Conference

It is fair to say that the South Eastern Conference goes deep this season with four of the top six teams coming from that conference. This level of competition highlights the depth of talent within the conference as well as raises the stakes for every matchup. Teams like Alabama and Florida are proving to be serious contenders. Tennessee’s fall reminds us how quickly fortunes can change in such a competitive environment. As the season progresses, the SEC’s performance will undoubtedly shape the landscape of the NCAA Tournament.

With each week bringing new surprises and challenges, the road to March Madness remains as unpredictable as ever. Guaranteeing excitement for players, coaches, and fans like me who are eagerly waiting to see what Dan Hurley and Bruce Pearl have planned to guide their teams through the tumultuous journey ahead!
