After handing a thumping defeat to the Big Blue Nation, everyone thought that it was finally Rick Barnes’ year again. The Tennessee Volunteers have looked dangerous all season, and their defense has been something to write home about. However, Houston and Kelvin Sampson set the record straight quite quickly.

It was a one-sided onslaught, with Houston scoring more than double of what the Vols had managed in the first half. The 15-34 half is a dark mark in the Vols history books for sure. In fact, Tennessee’s performance was so lackluster that it set a new NCAA record!

College basketball insider Jeff Borzello shared an embarrassing stat on X for Rick Barnes and his crew. “Tennessee’s 15 points are the fewest first-half points in an Elite Eight game since seeding began in 1979.” The tweet read, showing how shameful their performance really was.

We expected trouble for Tennessee, but not to this extent. Both the teams have roughly the same archetype–play defense hard, and the offense will take care of itself. According to KenPom ratings, this is a clash of the #1 team defensively, which is Houston, versus #3 Tennessee. However, no one expected the defensive gap to be this large. The only saving grace for the Vols has been Jordan Gainey, who has been amazing off the bench.

With about five minutes left in the game, Tennessee has forced a bit of a revival. They’re only down by 10, thanks to Gainey’s explosive 15pt performance. However, the Vols have a huge turnover issue. 9 turnovers is simply not acceptable, especially when Houston only has three. Tennessee was a team that was supposed to ‘out-Houston Houston’, and that just doesn’t look like it’ll happen. But what do the fans have to say about this performance? Let’s find out!

Fans call out Rick Barnes for first-half humiliation

Social media, as expected, went nuclear. Tennessee set a record, yes, but it wasn’t to their benefit. Not to mention, expectations were high from the Vols this season, especially after the thrashing they gave Kentucky. So it’s safe to say that the NCAA community didn’t react well.

Supporters didn’t pull any punches against Rick Barnes and the Tennessee-based team. “How dumb am I to think this Tennessee team could go to the final four with Rick Barnes so stupid.” A fan said on X, calling out the Volunteers head coach for the team’s performance.

It was definitely a common sentiment after the head coach’s tame reaction to the beating his team took in the first half. “We got to make some shots obviously,” He said, giving props to the Cougars’ defense. “I didn’t think we were aggressive enough coming off of it the way we needed to, in terms of making the next pass but we still got to do a better job defensively too.”

This is not the level of passion fans want to see from a coach that just hit an all-time low! Fans tore into the Tennessee head coach with no reprieve. “Can someone explain to me again why people think Rick Barnes is a good coach?” A user said on X, with many agreeing with the thought. Some, however, weren’t as gentle in their criticism of Barnes. “My f-cking intramural basketball team could beat Tennessee man. Is Rick Barnes smoking cr-ck?” A disgruntled fan said.

Kelvin Sampson’s coaching prowess has been proved in front of a team that modelled itself after Houston. The copy can’t beat the original, of course, and fans pointed that fact out. “Kelvin Sampson out here embarrassing that f–kin hack Rick Barnes.”

All in all, it isn’t a good day to be a Tennessee fan. “Embarrassing performance out of Tennessee so far. Rick Barnes is trash, Way to have the boys ready to play.”  A fan summarized succinctly. Houston has been dominating Barnes’ team, and the NCAA community is showing no mercy at all.

The Volunteers are an amazing team, no doubt, but they did a number of things wrong. Houston got inside the paint really well, and their defense was much better than anything we could’ve expected. It will be a tough loss for the Vols, but Rick Barnes will have the opportunity to bounce back next year. March Madness is hitting its peak right now, and we can’t be more excited for the action!
