With Oregon State failing to take the next step and record consistent net-positive seasons, it was time for a change. The Oregon State Beavers Men’s college basketball team is reportedly set to shuffle its coaching staff to achieve better results. The college program has taken the tough decision to part ways with head coach Wayne Tinkle.

According to sources at ESPN, Wayne Tinkle will leave the Oregon State college program at the end of the season. Oregon State finds itself far adrift of the leading pack in the WCC Standings, with an overall record of 16 wins and 14 losses. Under Wayne Tinkle, the team has managed only 2 NCAA appearances in 12 seasons.

The report was first broken by John Canzano, with uncertainty surrounding the timing of the decision. It is still unclear whether Tinkle will be in charge of Oregon State’s last regular-season game. The report does not entail who Tinkle’s successor will be at Oregon State.

Wayne Tinkle has one more match left in the regular season, and he will leave the Beavers with an unfavorable overall record in his 12-year coaching tenure, regardless of whether he gets to coach the team against Santa Clara. The college program has left the choice to the 60-year-old, as Oregon State athletic director Scott Barnes revealed to The Field of 68.

The Beavers hired Wayne Tinkle in 2014 after the 60-year-old led Montana to back-to-back top places in the Big Sky regular season standings. Montana also won the Big Sky Tournament twice under Tinkle, in 2010 and 2012.

The 60-year-old led the Beavers to the Pac-12 Championship in 2021, a year that also saw Oregon State make a deep run to the Sweet Sixteen at the NCAA Tournament. While he could not get the Orange Express back to its former glory, fans will remember Tinkleball for the 2021 season.

Wayne Tinkle’s exit marks Oregon State’s first step in its Pac-12 return plan

The Oregon State Beavers are overhauling their Men’s college basketball program, with Wayne Tinkle becoming the first casualty of the process. Oregon State Vice President Scott Barnes revealed the decision while highlighting the need for change as they return to the Pac-12 conference in 2026.

“As we approach the dawn of the new Pac-12 era, we believe it is in the best interest of our men’s basketball program to transition to its next chapter,” said Barnes before adding,” These decisions are never easy, but we are focused on positioning our program for sustained success in a rapidly evolving collegiate athletics landscape.”

The Pac-12 conference was part of a brutal conference realignment, with Oregon State one of only 2 full members remaining after other teams jumped to other conferences because it failed to land a lucrative media rights deal. This saw Oregon State temporarily play in the WCC, where the Beavers have failed to be impactful.

The iconic Pac-12 conference will return in 2026 and have 9 representatives in the new season, and Oregon State wants to position itself for success when the conference resurrects.

Removing Wayne Tinkle is a gamble, as the 60-year-old led the Beavers to the Pac-12 Tournament Championship in 2021. However, new beginnings call for a deeper look, and Scott Barnes & co. might have felt it necessary to start afresh.
