It’s obstacle after obstacle for John Calipari as he tackles his first year as head coach at Arkansas. While it’s the same conference he has played in the last 15 years as head coach at Kentucky, the Razorbacks are a wildly different team than the Cats. While the coach has stated he is more focused on the process and building a culture than simply winning, he does acknowledge that results matter. And after two straight losses, their next opponent is even tougher.

No. 1 Tennessee was just brought down by No. 8 Florida in a huge upset as the Gators broke the Vols undefeated record on the season. It was the first time since April 2, 2007, that Florida beat the No.1 team (after Ohio State). It was a sellout crowd of 11,011 at the O’Connell Center that also included former Florida basketball and NBA great Jason Williams. The 73-43 victory was probably something Tennessee, or anyone really, saw coming for the No. 1 team in the country that was yet to drop a game.

Nevertheless, the Gators stunned the Vols, the latter having just come off an almost easy victory against Calipari’s Arkansas. The Florida team was incidentally coming off a loss to the Kentucky Wildcats but shook it off gloriously against the Vols. Next, they face the Razorbacks, and to make the most of this trip to Fayetteville, a big victory is needed.

But that makes things only more difficult for Calipari, which was recently discussed on The Mark Titus ShowThe host points out, “Alright so you’re John Calipari – he just played Tennessee as well – so he’s like, ‘Alright, we lost to Tennessee. They beat them by 30, this is concerning, I gotta get ready to play Florida.”

STILL FROM VIDEO: Saying that Florida deserved to win, Kentucky coach John Calipari laments the missed opportunities against the Gators.

After the Tennessee loss, Arkansas almost had the Ole Miss game. But giving up the chance to take the lead several times ultimately led to their downfall, making it an 0-2 conference start and fans’ wrath directed at John Calipari. Given, it’s only his first year with a team that he’s scrambled together with transfers and NIL promises.

His focus is on his group of players more active in the paint, although he’ll take threes if he can get them. Point is, he might need some time but if there’s anyone who knows how to turn around a team, it’s Coach Cal. Can the Razorbacks survive the rest of the conference season and make it out on the other side of the NCAA tournament?

John Calipari is NOT discouraged

After Boogie Fland, D.J. Wagner, and Big Z’s less than impressive performances against Ole Miss, John Calipari had a lot to say afterward. He blamed not only his players but also himself. Nevertheless, he’s not giving up easily. “Like I said, I have a lot of faith in this group,” Calipari said. “I’m disappointed. I’m not discouraged.”

“This league is really good. You’re going to take knocks. It’s just how it is. I was hoping we could get this game and, but, we didn’t so now we move on. Tomorrow will be our day for us. Friday, I’ll work on the next opponent.”

Saturday will be a game changer for Arkansas. If they lose, the firestorm of criticism will only get worse, and Calipari knows it. If they win, especially against Florida, it will work in the Razorbacks’ favor, even if not many are expecting it. Perhaps because they’re expected to lose, an underdog win would be a great confidence booster, if nothing else.
