March Madness might be over, but Transfer Madness? Not even close to done! Over 2,000 players have thrown their names into the mix, hoping to score a bigger NIL deal than what they’re currently getting. One recruiter who rarely lost out on battles pre-NIL was John Calipari at Kentucky. But now, as the head coach of Arkansas, he’s facing a reality he never had to deal with before. Losing out on 5-star athletes.

Yes, 5-star recruit Boogie Fland is on his way out. It was already confirmed on April 4 that the star guard would be entering the NBA Draft. Razorbacks fans knew they were likely losing their guy to the big leagues. But this evening delivered a shocking blow to everyone.

According to Jon Rothstein, the freshman guard is entering the transfer portal! A huge blow for Calipari! Rothstein took to X to deliver the news:

Fland averaged 13.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game this past season. But those numbers don’t even tell the full story. Before undergoing thumb surgery, Fland was dishing out 5.7 assists a night–good for second-best in the SEC. After returning for the NCAA Tournament, the five-star guard out of New York came off the bench in all three of Arkansas’ games. He put up 6 points each against Kansas and St. John’s, but it was his defense that really stood out. Fland had 3 steals against the Jayhawks, and one apiece versus St. John’s and Texas Tech.

While the report makes it clear that Boogie Fland is locked in on the NBA Draft and won’t be returning to Arkansas–it still raised eyebrows when he entered the transfer portal. Coach Cal had already braced himself for Fland’s departure to the NBA. But if the guard ends up playing for another college program instead of going pro, it would definitely sting.

Thankfully for Calipari, he’s been busy in the portal this offseason. He’s brought in enough talent to cushion the blow of losing a five-star athlete.

John Calipari and Co. make big moves

John Calipari is gearing up for a big Year 2 in Fayetteville. Sure, he’ll be without Johnell Davis, Jonas Aidoo, Boogie Fland, and Adou Thiero this season, but the Hogs aren’t short on talent. DJ Wagner, Trevon Brazile, and Billy Richmond III have all confirmed they’re coming back, giving Coach Cal a strong core to build around. As for Karter Knox? He’s still weighing his options. Knox entered his name in the 2025 NBA Draft but kept his eligibility intact–something Boogie Fland didn’t do.

Calipari’s not messing around. He’s added some serious size and depth to the frontcourt by bringing in Malique Ewin from Florida State and Nick Pringle from South Carolina. Then there’s the fifth-best recruiting class in the nation, led by two five-star guards—Darius Acuff Jr. and Meleek Thomas. Arkansas fans have plenty to be excited about heading into this new season.

Last season was a rollercoaster, with star players like Fland and Thiero spending significant time sidelined due to injuries, and things didn’t quite go as planned in the regular season. A 10th-place finish in the SEC wasn’t what anyone had hoped for. But come March, they flipped the script–pulling off a Cinderella run in the NCAA tournament and reminding everyone what they’re capable of. Now, with a reloaded roster, expectations are sky high. A Final Four run? That’s the dream! Whether Calipari delivers on that promise is something we’ll have to wait and see.
