Auburn is on high alert after their disastrous start to March! There’s no doubt that Bruce Pearl’s team maintained their dominance over a tough SEC for the last few months, but they can’t seem to keep the momentum alive. Over the four games that Auburn has played in March, they’ve lost three. Texas A&M buried them with their offense 83-72, Mark Sears got a buzzer-beater off in time to secure Bama’s 93-91 revenge, and Tennessee’s defensive pressure became too much for them to handle.

Regardless, they head into March Madness as the one seed. Their first-round matchup is against sixteenth-ranked Alabama State which is supposed to be a one-sided blowout. ESPN’s win predictor has Auburn’s winning percentage at 99%, and that might not be far from the truth! The issue, however, starts in the second round.

Lexington’s Rupp Arena, just 70 miles from Louisville’s campus, could turn into a de facto home game for the Cardinals. With a strong 27-7 record and a fanbase hungry for a return to March Madness glory—Louisville’s first tournament appearance since 2019—the Cardinals faithful are expected to travel in droves.

The Louisville Cardinals have been fantastic this season. Their impressive 18-2 record in the ACC, led by Chucky Hepburn and Terrence Edwards Jr. guaranteed them the eighth seed. However, they aren’t a true #8 team, and everyone knows it! Their defense is top-21 according to KenPom, and their offensive versatility is immense. Analysts are worried about an upset in Lexington, and it isn’t out of the realm of possibilities.

On The Field of 68: After Dark, show hosts Randolph Childress, Tyler Hansbrough, and John Fanta discussed the nightmarish second round prospects for Auburn. Lexington in general is a tough place to play at, but Louisville might even be bringing their squad at full strength. “Getting Reyne Smith back could get scary in Lexington.” RC said, bringing up the injured sharp-shooter.

If there’s one player who brings sudden life to Louisville’s offense, it’s Smith. The six-foot-two shooter brings an astounding 40% from deep for the Cardinals, and averaged 13ppg in the regular season. However, a right-ankle injury kept him from the court for the last four games. But he’s been cleared, and Auburn better watch out!

John Fanta went on to talk about how playing in Lexington will be tough for Bruce Pearl’s squad. “You’re gonna have the crowd behind you. They’re gonna be rooting for the upset.” If they let Louisville catch their rhythm, it won’t fare well for Auburn and Johni Broome.

However, you can say the same for the Cardinals. There’s a reason that Auburn dominated the regular season in the toughest conference in college basketball. Simply put? They’re one of the best teams in the nation. Auburn’s No. 1 seed might inspire confidence, but Bruce Pearl’s March Madness history offers a cautionary tale. Last year, on March 21, 2024, the Tigers—then a No. 4 seed—fell 78-76 to No. 13 Yale in the first round, a loss Pearl revisited with his team on March 19, 2025, saying, “Anybody can have that one shining moment.” So how can Chucky Hepburn and his group pull one over on the Tigers?

How can Louisville beat Bruce Pearl and his Tigers?

Pat Kelsey and his team have a golden opportunity in front of them. If they manage to overcome Creighton in the first round, the Cardinals have a shot at sending Auburn home. But what challenges do Bruce Pearl and his Auburn Tigers pose? A lot. We can’t lie, they’re a really good team!

Everyone knows that Johni Broome is the danger man to keep an eye on, but Auburn’s offense exists outside of him as well. John Fanta and his crew warned Kelsey about the dangers to come. Their biggest advice to Louisville? “You can’t leave Auburn shooters open. If you do it? You’re gonna pay.”

He drew attention to the fact that Auburn’s woes in March were primarily because of their failings at the perimeter. Johni Broome’s performances have been impressive, but where has Auburn leaked their three-point shooting momentum from? Tahaad Pettiford and Chad Baker-Mazara. Fanta agreed. “What made Auburn so dangerous was that Tahaad Pettiford and Chad Baker-Mazara, they get cooking and it’s all downhill from there.” Baker-Mazara has been engrossed in controversy for the past week, while Pettiford wasn’t looking great against Tennessee. Both of them combined for a single three-pointer out of seven attempts.

If Auburn’s shooters catch their rhythm again, it might be wraps for Louisville. But if Pat Kelsey paid attention to John Fanta? He should be good to go. It will certainly be an interesting matchup, if both teams progress to the second round. What do you think? Will Auburn manage to dominate Louisville? Or is there an upset on the cards? Stay tuned to find out!
