As Kim Mulkey prepares for the toughest chapter in her career, the iconic coach is still making some huge calls at LSU. One such decision about her potential replacement got everyone talking.

A constant presence in the LSU Tigers’ program is about to make his way to a rival league, and that wouldn’t be easy for anyone to take, let alone Kim Mulkey, who would miss out on one of her prized possessions. Gary Redus, who worked as an assistant under Mulkey, will now be joining Rutgers as a head coach for the first time in his coaching career.

Well, it’s a tough pill to swallow, no doubt, as it was Kim Mulkey who brought Redus on board during her second season in charge with the Tigers, and now, after four years, these two will be parting ways, which saw them make many memories, which includes an NCAA Championship in 2023.

Though emotional about the departure, Mulkey professionally supported Redus’s move, recognizing it as a major career opportunity.

“As I told him, you can’t be married to two wives.’ I said, ‘Get out of here, go to work, get your staff in place, get your kids that are there to stay.’ He hasn’t even visited Rutgers. He took the job over the phone or whatever.”

“I know his love for our program and our team, he’d want to be on the bench for us, too. But as a mentor, I can’t be selfish and ask him to stay with our team,” said Mulkey.

Well, Mulkey is right in her beliefs, holding back a coach when he committed to another college can be deemed as sabotage, and letting him go would be the best option, but many believe it will be Gary who will come back to Louisiana to lead the Tigers once Kim Mulkey hangs up her boots.

Is a Comeback to LSU Likely for Gary Redus?

If rumors are to be believed, Gary Redus is being deemed the most able man to take up the job with the Tigers when the change happens.

Redus’s resume speaks for itself. At LSU, he was a rising star recruiter and landed top LSU classes. His familiarity with the program and its culture makes him a natural candidate.

Before Redus even joined LSU, he had already made his name as an up-and-coming assistant coach and recruiter who was named to the 2020 WBCA “Thirty Under 30” list. Redus has a keen eye and the ability to differentiate between the good and the best. It was Redus who was able to recruit the unanimous No. 1 freshman class that included all five-stars (Bella Hines, Divine Bourrage, Grace Knox, and ZaKiyah Johnson).

Whether it was to help the Tigers secure ESPN’s top-ranked recruiting class or work closely with the guards to improve every aspect of their game, he was a silent presence who did his work diligently.

Most importantly, Redus has a great relationship with the LSU management and Kim Mulkey, and this comes from his own admission, so he wouldn’t need much convincing to be back on board if the Tigers choose to pursue him in the future.

But all that speculation can wait for now, as Kim Mulkey is still the beloved LSU coach and has a job to take care of this season, as a call for the national championships beckons the former champions from the swamps.
