Clemson’s in-arena announcer set the tone, saying he was “a true legend” whose passion and energy has defined college basketball for over four decades. It was deafening, and the visibly moved Vitale waved at the crowd to soak in that love.

This was “like my Super Bowl,” he told the broadcast over his crackling voice. “To be able to sit courtside and do a game, it beats the hell out of chemotherapy and radiation.” His message to cancer patients was equally powerful, “Think positive, have faith, and keep fighting.” Yet, while his word of return was a triumph.
