Dick Vitale is back where he belongs, and college basketball is better for it! After a grueling two-year battle with cancer, the iconic voice of DV returned to the broadcast booth for Duke-Clemson on ESPN, and the reception at Littlejohn Coliseum was nothing short of electric. But while fans, players, and coaches celebrated his emotional comeback, ESPN’s decision to prioritize a lackluster NBA game over Vitale’s return left many scratching their heads—and firing off angry tweets.

One tweet from College Basketball Content summed it up perfectly: “Shoutout to ESPN for not letting us see a legendary college basketball announcer (Dick Vitale) return to calling games after battling cancer. Instead, we got to watch the end of a meaningless NBA game where both Luka and LeBron didn’t play.”

ESPN’s decision didn’t sit well with fans either and social media quickly lit up with criticism. Instead of airing the start of the Duke-Clemson game—and Vitale’s long-awaited return—ESPN kept viewers glued to the end of a meaningless NBA matchup between the Mavericks and Lakers.

But while Vitale’s return was a heartwarming moment. The moment Vitale stepped onto the court, the crowd erupted. Clemson’s in-arena announcer set the tone, saying he was “a true legend” whose passion and energy has defined college basketball for over four decades. It was deafening, and the visibly moved Vitale waved at the crowd to soak in that love.

This was “like my Super Bowl,” he told the broadcast over his crackling voice. “To be able to sit courtside and do a game, it beats the hell out of chemotherapy and radiation.” His message to cancer patients was equally powerful, “Think positive, have faith, and keep fighting.” Yet, while his word of return was a triumph. ESPN’s decision sidelined the moment.

Fans react to ESPN’s oversight: Dick Vitale deserves better!

A fan tweeted, “NBA is so unwatchable. And has wrecked College Basketball at the same time”. This tweet hints at frustration that’s been brewing among hardcore college basketball fans for years—the idea that the NBA’s influence has taken something away from the college game.

Another fan didn’t hold back, simply tweeting, “Shi–y a-s company.” It was a raw, unfiltered shot at ESPN, and it captured what a lot of fans were feeling in that moment. The anger wasn’t just about missing Dick Vitale’s return—it was about a pattern.

Yet another fan took things to the extreme, tweeting, “The NBA should not be televised EVER!!! #ExecutiveOrder.” It was dramatic, sure, but it spoke to the level of frustration boiling over in the college basketball community.

Another fan weighed in with a sharp criticism, tweeting, “ESPN’s coverage of college basketball – excluding the analysts – is embarrassing.” This fan wasn’t pulling any punches, calling out the network’s overall handling of college hoops. While ESPN has some of the best analysts in the business, the way they’ve been prioritizing other sports, especially the NBA, felt like a slap in the face to college basketball’s fans.

Another fan took it to the next level when he proclaimed, “Every NBA game is meaningless.” The fan wasn’t holding anything back, relating that he had no attachment to what the NBA was offering. Of course, his reasoning was that these games lacked the intensity, passion, and tradition found in college basketball.

This isn’t only a one-time decision in terms of broadcasting; it is a recognition of the specific attractiveness of college basketball and of those icons that make it happen. Vitale’s return-to-call games is such a rare, fleeting moment in sports. And fans are deprived of having had the experience at all.
