As he looks to lead the Kentucky Wildcats to a ninth NCAA championship title, head coach Mark Pope has his eyes set on the nation’s No. 6 high school recruit, Caleb Holt, as the key to their success. Given the stakes are higher than they’ve ever been, Holt has caught the eye of some of the country’s elite programs with his impressive play and drive. Is Kentucky the one that can pull ahead?

At 6’5, shooting guard Caleb Holt has become a player that powerhouse schools like North Carolina, Alabama, Auburn, and Houston have been watching. Yet Kentucky seems to be making all the right moves to get him. In his recent interview about his recruitment process, Holt revealed he found a personal connection to the Wildcats assistant coach Jason Hart.

Interestingly, Holt has spoken highly of Kentucky’s approach. “I talk to Jason a lot, like every week, so the relationship we have is great,” Holt shared.

Talking about Coach Mark Pope, he said  “He thinks I am a guy he can see at Kentucky. A guy that can win a National Championship.” Holt is a critical piece to Kentucky reclaiming glory, with eight titles already in their trophy case including their most recent winning in 2012.

Holt’s record speaks for itself. He has won consecutive state championships in Alabama, earning MVP honors both times. At the FIBA Under-17 World Cup in Turkey, Holt added a gold medal to his achievements. His stats for the 2023-2024 season were equally impressive: 20.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 3 steals per game. 

But Holt’s move to Grayson High School in Georgia has kept him in the spotlight. He scored 20 points at the City of Palms Classic and showed he could do so much more. And a powerhouse like Kentucky is taking notice of his performance, especially with Pope trying to set his footing in Lexington after Calipari’s long stay.

Why Mark Pope’s Kentucky might land Holt

One thing Holt has made clear is he wants to find a coach that believes in him. In a way, the Wildcats will have an advantage here, as both Mark Pope and Jason Hart have left an impression during Kentucky’s recruitment.

“Coach Mark Pope came to my school to talk to me. We got on a Zoom call, and he wants me.” Holt revealed that he reinforced the Wildcats’ commitment to building a relationship with them. Kentucky can go a little further than the others because Holt has gotten such passion and conviction from Pope.

Also, Holt has built bonds of trust with assistant coach Jason Hart. Former NBA point guard Hart has stayed in touch and given encouragement and support. How much does this bond enter into Holt’s decision-making? The guard looks to be destined for greatness looking ahead. 

Regardless of whether he puts on the Kentucky jersey or not, his talent and his desire won’t be forgotten. For now, the Wildcats are making their case. And if Pope’s vision holds true, Caleb Holt might just be the missing piece Kentucky needs to capture its ninth NCAA title.
