From a young age, KK Arnold envisioned herself playing for UConn. She was highly influenced by former Huskies’ like Moriah Jefferson and aspired to be part of the storied program. Even when 40 schools came to her with offers, Arnold remained steadfast.

“Growing up, UConn was the school … and when it came to just like the recruitment process, it just came down to visits and how I felt,” she shared during a 2024 ESPN interview. And how did she feel? “When I stepped into UConn’s campus, it just felt like home.”

But was it just the campus? Of course not! Her teammates made sure to welcome her with open arms. Well, those warm, open arms were only for the taking when the girls were off the court. On the court, there was no mercy. And no one was more ruthless than Paige Bueckers. A fact KK Arnold realized very soon.

In the latest episode of In Case You Missed It with Khristina Williams, Arnold recalled her “Welcome to UConn” moment. It wasn’t during a game, nor was it in a high-pressure drill. It was in a simple one-on-one practice session with Bueckers.

I’m guarding her, and I’m like, ‘Alright, I gotta lock in.’ She hit me like, with a mean like, jab cross and then a step-back,” Arnold shared. “Mind you, I’ve seen like everything like TV and everything, like videos of her like I never played against her. So she hit me with that…. and she went back to the top of key, like, alright, next in line.”

That moment cemented Bueckers’ reputation in Arnold’s eyes—not just as a teammate but as a competitor who demands the best from those around her. And right there, Arnold was drawn to the competitive environment, vying for the opportunity to elevate her game.

“I wanted to be a part of something great and something to build my game to the next level—beyond college basketball—and also building my legacy in college basketball.” So, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that she has molded herself into greatness after acquiring skills and leadership qualities from the nation’s top guards. “Learn from the best of the best… that’s how I can put it.” But all of this was just the beginning of the greatness ahead.

From teammate to “big sister,” a bond Paige Bueckers has nurtured over the years

When asked what she’s learned from Bueckers in their one-and-a-half years together, Arnold didn’t hesitate. “Honestly, from watching her, she’s never going to stop,” Arnold said. “She’s motivated each and every day. She does the little stuff. She’s a great leader. Her voice carries over.”

It’s not just about making shots or dazzling with highlight-reel plays. Bueckers leads by example, setting a standard that teammates can’t help but follow. After all, it’s not easy to be a strong contender for NPOY once again after winning the title once.

“She does a great job and tries to do things the right way the first time so we can follow behind her and carry over from her energy,” Arnold added.

That energy is something UConn has relied on time and time again. After facing their second loss of the season against USC in December, she helped the Huskies make a comeback. In the following game against Providence, she led the roster in all three key statistics with her 23 points, four rebounds, and four assists.

Even off the court, Bueckers’ bond with her teammates is invaluable. Can’t believe it? Even Arnold admits it. She describes Bueckers as a big sister. She didn’t expect to form such a close bond so quickly, but it happened naturally. “I thought it was gonna take me a few weeks,” Arnold admitted. “But I just gravitated towards her right away.”

Bueckers’ return for her final season at UConn was a huge moment for Arnold, who continues to learn from the Huskies’ leader. “It’s really big, honestly,” Arnold said. “Just having her for one more year means a lot. For me, who’s still learning from her, seeing the game through her eyes—it’s special.”

In the end, UConn’s success isn’t just about individual brilliance—it’s about the relentless culture Bueckers embodies and passes down. Arnold is just one of the many Huskies, learning what it truly means to be great.
