Just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse, they’ve turned darker for the Air Force Falcons. The Falcons will miss their head coach, Joe Scott, for the upcoming games. Already on a 10-game losing streak, the team management delivered the hammer blow in an official statement.

“Joe Scott has been suspended indefinitely pending an investigation into the treatment of cadet-athletes,” the school said Saturday.

Assistant Jon Jordan will serve as the interim coach.

“In response to today’s action, I will fully cooperate with the investigation and look forward to a proper resolution of this matter,” Scott said in a statement. “I will not have any further comment until the matter is resolved.”

Scott perhaps had the most successful run in Air Force men’s basketball history during his first stint as head coach from 2001 to 2004, leading the Falcons to their first Mountain West title and first NCAA tournament appearance in 42 years. He forever changed the fortunes of a program that had not had a winning season in 22 years.

However, Scott has not been able to replicate the same level of success in his second stint since the 2020-21 season, after spending time at Georgia under coach Tom Crean.

Scott led the Falcons to a combined 97-183 record in his two stints. His immediate replacement, Jordan, a three-year letter winner, is an Air Force Academy alum who graduated in 1985. Jordan has been with Scott since the 2022-23 season. He was also a member of Scott’s first coaching roster at the Air Force from 2000 to 2004.

Does a bigger calamity await the Falcons ahead of the Nevada game?

Ideally, one could argue this isn’t the worst time for a coaching change. The Falcons are in danger of finishing last in the league for a third straight year, a situation that has to change, and fast.

They face the 4th-ranked team in the Mountain West, the Nevada Wolf Pack, which is currently 12-5 overall and a heavy favorite. A look at the team statistics shows the huge difference between the two teams.
