Some moments transcend basketball. They demand presence, not plays. For Dawn Staley, one such moment came on Monday.

Away from the court and the spotlight of the ongoing 2025-26 NCAA season, the South Carolina Gamecocks head coach found herself in the midst of a solemn procession. She was honoring a South Carolina native whose impact shaped the nation.

The legendary coach joined the procession carrying the casket of Rev. Jesse Jackson into the South Carolina State House, paying tribute to the civil rights icon and native son of Greenville.

In images captured by state media visual journalist Tracy Glantz, Dawn Staley could be seen dressed in all black, walking alongside Jackson’s family, loved ones, and fellow activists.

After Jackson’s demise on February 17 at the age of 84 in Chicago, a cross-country memorial service began as his casket made its way home.

As per reports, South Carolina officials ensured the moment was marked with solemnity. Governors Henry McMaster and Josh Stein ordered U.S. and state flags to fly at half-staff until sunset Saturday in his honor.

Back in February, when the news of Jackson’s death reached Staley, she took to X to show her respect for the life that was spent fighting for justice and equality.

“May Reverend Jesse Jackson’s soul rest in peace and love! Peace and love to his loved ones and the people he served. ❤️,” she wrote.

Now, her appearance in the procession only underscored the depth of her respect for Jackson. But the Gamecocks’ season doesn’t pause, and Dawn Staley’s focus now turns to guiding her team through the daunting stretch of March.

Dawn Staley Leads Gamecocks Through a Historic Season

The No. 3 South Carolina Gamecocks recently wrapped a stellar 29-2 regular season, finishing 15-1 in SEC play with a 60-56 road win over Kentucky.

On the stat sheet, the Gamecocks as a whole are averaging 87.2 points per game, while rebounding at 42.6. Dawn Staley’s squad dominated in most of the games. But now, the Gamecocks will turn their focus to the postseason.

As the top seed in the SEC, South Carolina earns a double-bye into Friday’s SEC quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of Thursday’s Georgia vs. Arkansas-Kentucky clash.

The team is aiming for a fourth consecutive SEC Tournament title before defending its national championship in the NCAA Tournament.

As one of the most decorated coaches in women’s college basketball, Staley is no stranger to balancing personal convictions with professional obligations. While it remains unclear whether she will travel to Chicago for the final ceremonies, with the postseason looming, the Gamecocks will enter as one of the top contenders behind UConn and UCLA.

But Monday was a reminder that leadership is measured not just by wins but by standing up for what matters off the court.
