Sunday’s nationally televised matchup between the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky already carries its own spotlight. But according to a new report, another figure could draw attention away from the action on the court. Former NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom is reportedly planning to attend the game in Chicago, placing himself at the center of a controversy that has recently spilled into the WNBA.

“Enes Kanter Freedom is planning to attend Sunday’s Fever vs Sky WNBA game in Chicago, per sources,” wrote TMZ Sports’ executive producer Michael J. Babcock via X. “The game will be nationally televised.”

Babcock connected Freedom’s expected appearance to the former NBA player’s recent declaration for the 2027 WNBA Draft. That declaration is what transformed Enes Kanter Freedom from a spectator into a major part of the conversation surrounding the league.

Freedom has argued that the WNBA’s eligibility rules would technically allow him to enter the draft if he identified as a woman. He has presented the move as a challenge to the league’s policies surrounding transgender participation rather than a genuine attempt to pursue a professional WNBA career.

The issue initially triggered attention after Sophie Cunningham became involved in the broader debate over transgender participation in women’s sports. The Indiana Fever guard publicly voiced her opposition to transgender women competing in female sports, triggering both criticism and support.

Enes Kanter Freedom quickly emerged as one of Cunningham’s most vocal supporters.

During an appearance on My View With Lara Trump, the former NBA player praised Cunningham and described her as an “American hero.

His support placed him firmly on one side of an already divisive national conversation. Inevitably, it made his reported decision to attend the Fever game particularly notable.

The timing only adds another layer.

Enes Kanter Freedom recently announced that he had submitted paperwork declaring for the 2027 WNBA Draft.

And he argued that the league’s current eligibility language does not contain the restrictions he believes would prevent him from entering. He has also claimed that other former professional basketball players could potentially follow the same path.

Whether that argument holds up under the WNBA’s actual eligibility and administrative processes remains a separate question.

But Freedom’s campaign has already forced the league to respond publicly to the growing political spectacle.

The league pushed back against efforts it characterized as attempts to use the league and its athletes for political purposes.

“We will not be used as political pawns,” the league wrote in a statement.

That response has done little to remove Freedom from the conversation. Particularly after his reported appearance, the issue has now been brought directly to one of the league’s marquee matchups.

And the setting couldn’t have been any better.

The Fever continue to rank among the WNBA’s most popular draws, thanks largely to Caitlin Clark. Meanwhile, games featuring Chicago consistently generate significant attention. A nationally televised matchup between the two teams offers Enes Kanter Freedom the high-profile platform his recent campaign has sought.

However, his presence doesn’t necessarily mean the game itself will become a political event. Freedom will reportedly attend as a spectator. And the focus inside Wintrust Arena will remain on the players competing on the floor.

For now, the basketball remains the main event.

But when the Fever and Sky take the court on Sunday, attention may not stay there for the entire night.
