A viral video from outside Madison Square Garden has raised serious concern after J.R. Smith was mobbed and nearly trampled by fans following the New York Knicks’ Game 1 win over the Philadelphia 76ers. What started as a postgame celebration quickly turned chaotic, with the two-time NBA champion caught in the middle of a surging crowd.

In the clip, Smith is seen trying to push through a tightly packed crowd as fans surround him, reaching, grabbing, and closing in from all sides. As the pressure builds, he visibly loses his composure, attempting to create space while being jostled in multiple directions.
The situation escalates quickly. At one point, a woman can be heard shouting, “Guys stop,” as Smith appears to lose his footing amid the crush of bodies. While a few individuals try to pull him up, others continue pushing forward, turning the moment into a dangerous crowd surge rather than a celebration.
It remains unclear how Smith ultimately got out of the crowd or whether he sustained any injuries. As of now, there has been no official update on his condition, and he has not addressed the incident publicly.

The reaction online has been immediate. While many expressed concern for Smith’s safety, others criticized the behavior of the crowd, calling out individuals who prioritized viral moments over basic awareness in a packed environment.
This is another, and so far the worst, incident that summarizes the emotions running high in New York as the Knicks are in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
From Graduation Celebration to Postgame Chaos
The moment stands in stark contrast to what Smith was celebrating just a day earlier. The former NBA guard has been preparing for a major personal milestone after stepping away from basketball. After retiring from the NBA in 2020, Smith returned to school in 2021 and joined the golf team at North Carolina A&T. He is now set to graduate this week, marking a second chapter that has drawn widespread admiration.
Reflecting on that journey, Smith said, “I say it with a lot of pride. When I speak the name of A&T, it comes with such pride and joy to my heart because it saved me from a point where I was going to destruct from the inside out.”
His commencement ceremony is scheduled for May 9, and fans are now hoping the chaotic incident does not impact his ability to attend.
This is only a singular example of heightened tensions during the 76ers-Knicks series. After Joel Embiid made a direct plea to Philly fans to not sell their tickets, the Sixers even implemented a residency-based ticketing system. That’s also epically failed as data shows that Knicks fans are using New Jersey zip codes and other ways to get tickets to XFinity Mobile Arena. They’re even gloating how unstoppable they’re are online.
Knicks fans, known for their strong travel presence and vocal support, have consistently made their impact felt throughout the playoffs, both at home and on the road.
That same energy has now spilled beyond the court. While the passion of the fan base remains one of New York’s defining traits, the incident involving Smith serves as a reminder that celebration can quickly turn dangerous when control is lost.
