The camera flashbulbs may have dimmed, but the legend Michael Jordan still burns bright into the eyes of the fans. From his soaring dunks to his unbreakable will, the ‘GOAT’ for many has impacted millions of lives around him. For decade, Jordan’s name has been synonymous with greatness in all fields he has been part of. He has dominated not only the courts during his playing career but also the businesses he has established, including his sneaker industry and team ownership. Yet despite all that, there’s one arena he has largely avoided since he retirement: the media spotlight.
Over the years, MJ has consciously chosen to remain distant from TV roles or punditry, unlike many of his old teammates. Someone who believes in letting legacy do the talking has always opted for privacy and selective appearances. He almost established an unwritten rule when his minimal media presence turned into a principle. Could there be a break in that silence soon?
One of the most renowned individuals in basketball, Michael Jordan, is about to come back to the NBA spotlight in a way that nobody imagined, but this time off the court. Joining NBC as part of their forthcoming NBA coverage starting with the league’s new media rights agreement in 2026, the six-time NBA champion and former franchise owner will take on an unexpected project.

NBC is ready to re-enter the NBA broadcasting scene, having previously hosted historic moments from Jordan’s championship runs with the Chicago Bulls. Jordan has been brought in to help in a different way as part of their plan to improve coverage.

Though the precise details of his involvement have not yet been revealed, Jordan will be a “special contributor to the project,” announced during NBC’s Upfronts. His participation is a significant full-circle event since all six of his titles aired on NBC.
Michael McCarthy and Andrew Marchand initially broke the story, both stressing the relevance of Jordan’s return to a network so closely linked to his career high points. Jordan’s presence by itself brings great star power and nostalgic appeal to NBC’s NBA comeback while fans wait for information on his contributions.

Charles Barkley’s fallout lingers over Michael Jordan’s next move!
What makes this comeback particularly noteworthy is that it represents a significant departure from a personal limit Jordan has long maintained as the one that cost him a 20-year friendship with NBA great Charles Barkley. Once as strong as brothers, their relationship broke apart after Barkley publicly condemned Jordan’s management of the Charlotte Bobcats (now Hornets) over a decade ago.

“The guy was like a brother to me for, shoot, 20-something years,” Barkley said in a 2020 interview with ESPN 1000. “And I do, I feel sadness… but there’s nothing I can do about it, brother.” That emotional thought came from something Barkley said in 2012: he called out Jordan’s management for surrounding him with “kiss-asses” and not bringing in critical views. They never talked to each other again.

Ironically, the precise position that Barkley made is the field Jordan now enters, becoming an analyst and providing honest views. Still, his arrival into basketball media looks carefully planned. Jordan perhaps won’t be on nightly shows analyzing team strategy as a “special contributor.” After a past of media ignorance, his presence nevertheless makes the upcoming season even more interesting. NBC’s capacity to attract Jordan might be about more than nostalgia; it could indicate a fresh start for both the network and the GOAT.
