Tyler Reddick may be at the top of the leaderboard, but 23XI Racing continues to have its own problems. Not too long ago, Michael Jordan told CBS’s Gayle King that he embraced NASCAR because he was tired of living up to everybody’s expectations in the NBA. His Airness shockingly called the Chicago Bulls’ legacy days a “huge burden” after all these years. Part of that burden, though, doesn’t appear to have left him as he spends more time on the racing circuit.

Trouble for Jordan’s team began at the Charlotte Motor Speedway last weekend. Even though many might’ve initially missed the incident, it became a sport-wide headline once NASCAR released its weekly report. One of 23XI Racing’s female members received a suspension for a “behavioral” incident that violated Section 4.4A.

According to Cabarrus County court records, Evanna Daneen Howell, 35, was arrested on Saturday and charged with assaulting Dennis Manchester at the track. Details from the incident were not initially available, but court records show Judge Matthew Black found probable cause that Howell “unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously did assault Dennis Manchester with golf cart used to assault the victim deadly weapon, inflicting serious injury.” The 77-year-old suffered a “serious laceration.” But so far, neither Jordan nor any officials at 23XI Racing or NASCAR have responded to requests for a comment.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Howell has been with 23XI Racing since 2021. She is a senior account manager. Police said the incident happened Sunday afternoon around 1:45 p.m., but the real reason for the entire clash remains unknown. Howell had been suspended indefinitely.

After an initial court appearance on May 26, Howell was released on a $125,000 bond, according to ESPN. Her next court appearance is on June 16. She has retained attorney Harold Cogdell Jr., who did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press for comment.

Howell’s LinkedIn profile also suggests she has handled sponsorship and client work for the racing team. Before joining MJ’s squad, Howell had already built her career across several sports and entertainment companies. The Org states she worked as a Business Intelligence Manager at Loud And Live and as a Project Manager at Feld Entertainment. Her background also includes work with the Charlotte Hornets and the Jacksonville Jaguars, where she focused on sales programs and client management.

Pivoting back to MJ and negative publicity, he was stuck in another team controversy not long ago. During the Daytona 500 victory lane celebration in February, a video went viral in which Jordan appeared to be picking ice out of the shirt of Tyler Reddick’s six-year-old son, Beau. That video was badly misunderstood online. Netizens complained that the NBA legend was standing behind Beau and pinching him. But Reddick came to His Airness’ rescue.

Reddick explicitly stated that he “doesn’t see what other people see.” He emphasized that Jordan is incredibly close with his family and that the entire narrative was a “nothingburger” blown out of proportion. It was rather the moment where Jordan was tugging the cold shirt and removing stray pieces of ice that had fallen off young Beau’s back during the celebration.

Jordan has remained silent on both controversies, making no statement from his end.
