WNBA star Brittney Griner has been detained in Russia for more than seven months now. Despite efforts from the U.S government, the situation has not changed so far. Recently, President Joe Biden met with Cherelle Griner, the spouse of Brittney Griner, and reassured her about the efforts to bring the star back home. The government has classified her as “wrongfully detained”?and there were reports of a substantial offer made to the Russian government by the US government. Ever since her arrest, the WNBA and its players have been continuously showing their support to the Phoenix Mercury center.

They have been voicing their disappointment with the efforts of the government as well. The Mercury selected Griner as the first pick of the 2013 WNBA draft. She hit the ground running and helped them win a title in 2014. The 31-year-old hooper has also won two Olympic gold medals for the country. Sue Bird is another WNBA legend who has won a mindboggling five Olympic gold medals in her career. She was also a #1 pick like Griner.
The Seattle Storm selected Bird as the first pick in the 2002 NWBA draft. After playing for 20 seasons for the same organization, she announced her retirement this season.

Sue Bird and Brittney Griner played together for the U.S national team in the 2016 Rio Olympics and 2020 Tokyo Olympics, securing the gold on both occasions. Bird once talked about some of the everyday struggles the towering center went through on a daily basis. “There are times when she would get mistaken for a guy. She would walk into a woman?s bathroom and someone would stop her and be, ‘Oh, no, this is not your bathroom.’ I’ve heard people call her sir at an airport. ‘Excuse me, sir, can you come this way?’,” said Bird.
However, that did not faze her national teammate, Bird revealed. “She?s just like, ‘Whatever.’ She almost has a vibe about her. ‘No one’s going to ruin my day.'”
Bird also played for UMMC Ekaterinburg from 2011 to 14 during the WNBA offseason. Griner has been playing for the same club since 2014.
