Irrespective of whether someone is a basketball fan or not, Brittney Griner is a name that resonates with millions around the world currently. After all, her arrest has sent headlines for the past few weeks.
The WNBA star was arrested in Russia a few months ago after officials convicted her of possessing illegal substances in her luggage. This started a long legal procedure and a few days ago, Griner was sentenced to 9 years in prison.

Subsequently, this urged celebrities from across the world to give their thoughts regarding the situation. Eminent celebrities and also politicians broke their silence on the issue. While some urged the government to bring her back to the United States, some feel she should complete her sentence.
Interestingly, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris also sent her support to Griner. Harris took to Twitter to break her silence and give some support to the former Olympic champion Brittney Griner.
With today’s sentencing, Russia continues its wrongful detention of Brittney Griner. She should be released immediately. @POTUS and I, and our entire Administration, are working every day to reunite Brittney, as well as Paul Whelan, with loved ones who miss each of them dearly.

This wasn’t taken well by senior Democratic leader, Tulsi Gabbard, who lashed out at Kamala Harris. She said, “Where is your outrage for your fellow Americans who are sitting in prison today here in the United States of America for minor marijuana violations.”
She further said. “How come you are not fighting as hard for them to be returned home and reunited with their families as you are for Brittney Griner.”
Moreover, she said that she believes Harris is sending out the wrong message to the public. Gabbard talked about how the rich and powerful will be treated differently for drug charges under the present Government.
What did the former POTUS say about Brittney Griner?
It is not only the present leaders of the Government who have talked about Griner. A few days ago, former President of the United States, Donald Trump, lashed out at the WNBA star.
He asserted that he does not want the officials to bring Griner back to the country. Rather, she should face time for breaking the law in a foreign country. Trump said, “They don’t like drugs. And she got caught. And now we’re supposed to get her out — and she makes, you know, a lot of money, I guess.“
