There is no denying that Michael Jordan is one of the greatest sporting icons ever. Needless to say, there have been numerous players who have been compared to MJ. Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant was widely considered the closest thing to Michael Jordan.

MJ and Kobe shared a master and apprentice relationship. More often than not, Michael helped Kobe get better at his game, and Kobe Bryant himself has talked about how helpful Jordan was.

However, this did not mean Jordan hesitated from cracking jokes at Bryant. All the way back in 1998, MJ was one of the best players in the league while Kobe was relatively young.

During the ESPY award, MJ earned an award. Although he wasn’t present during the ceremony to collect the award, Jordan made sure he left his mark nevertheless.

The announcer said, “Michael couldn’t be here tonight because he is busy taking Kobe Bryant to school so to accept the award for Michael…”. She then reveals that eminent actor Bill Murray was on behalf of MJ to take the award. That’s one way to leave your mark on a ceremony despite not attending it!

Leaving all the occasional banter aside, Michael Jordan was a major inspiration for Kobe Bryant. During his time in the NBA, Bryant was known to be a well-rounded player who offered both offensively and defensively.

Chicago Bulls legend Jordan helped Bryant become a better defender and helped him to become who he is today. After a game between the Bulls and the Lakers, MJ approached Kobe.

“If you ever need anything, give me a call,” said the 6 time NBA champion. Moreover, according to reports, Jordan helped Bryant by giving him tips on how to hold off defenders and how to defend better.

Safe to say, MJ’s advice worked. Bryant established himself as one of the greatest players ever and retired with 5 NBA titles and various other individual accolades.
