A Russian court near Moscow has sentenced WNBA star Brittney Griner to 9 years in jail. While the prosecutors asked for a 9 and 1/2 year prison sentence, the judge has given 9 years. The devastating news would be a huge blow for Griner, her wife, and her family. She is one of the best ever WNBA players ever. And before joining the WNBA, Griner was a huge college star for the Baylor Lady Bears in Waco, Texas. She led her team to an NCAA championship win in 2012.

Brittney Griner was named the AP Player of the Year and the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four.?She also won the Best Female Athlete ESPY Award in 2012. She is the only?NCAA basketball player to score 2,000 points and block 500 shots.

When LeBron James was asked about Griner, he was full of praise for the rookie. He talked about Griner’s dominance in college basketball.

James said, “There’s really no one that can match her right now… You would love to see Lisa Leslie in her prime vs. Brittney Griner. That would be an ideal matchup. But what she’s doing out there on the floor, it’s not fair, it’s like Wilt. She’s out there like Wilt… She’s too big, she’s too strong.”

He also said that Griner was not just catching the ball and laying it up or dunking. James said that she was hitting jumpers and fadeaways consistently too. He also wished her good luck in the WNBA. James said, “Hey Brittney, best of luck to you on your next journey. You had an unbelievable college career and I wish you the best at the next level.” The Lakers superstar has been one of the most vocal about the detained WNBA star’s situation in Russia.

The #1 pick, however, didn’t win the Rookie of the Year award. She made the WNBA All-Rookie team. Griner is one of the most dominant WNBA players on both ends of the court. She is one of the best rim protectors in the league. Griner has been the blocks leader of the NBA for 8 years and it was 7 straight years from 2013 to 2019, and then one in 2021.

Griner has also helped the national team clinch the Olympic Gold on two occasions. During the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
