Russia released Brittney Griner in exchange for arms dealer Viktor Bout last week. Griner spent over nine months in prison where conditions are reportedly brutal. After her release, she was flown to the Joint Base San Antonio. It is a military facility that has reportedly been the first stop for Americans released from captivity this year. She was then taken to a medical center on the base where she had some medical evaluations. One week after her release, Griner finally released a public statement via her Instagram account.

In the statement, Griner conveyed her gratitude to her family, her legal team, President Joe Biden, and his administration, the WNBA family, and so forth. Also, she appreciated the “PISA” staff at the military base in San Antonio.

PISA refers to ?post-isolation support activities.? As per a recent report from ‘The Washington Post,’?“It?s a program that was developed by the military to address the physical and psychological needs of people who have been detained or held hostage.”

“As I transition home to enjoy the holidays with my family, I want to acknowledge and thank the entire PISA staff and medical team at the San Antonio Fort Sam Houston Base. I appreciate the time and care to make sure I was okay and equipped with the tools for this new journey,” Brittney Griner wrote on Instagram.

The Phoenix Mercury star also stated that she is grateful to everyone who advocated for her release. Since her detainment in February, many fans and celebrities showed their support for her. Celebrities used their platforms to take it to the masses. Many urged the government to bring her back as soon as possible, while some criticized the government as well.

After months of continued engagement with Russia, the U.S. was able to bring Griner back home.

Griner will play in the upcoming WNBA season

Recently, Brittney Griner’s agent Lindsay Kagawa Colas revealed that she is doing well after the medical evaluation at the military base. He added that she played a bit for the first time in ten months. The agent noted Griner would decide whether she would play in the upcoming WNBA season or not.

In her latest public statement, Griner revealed that she will play the upcoming WNBA season for the Phoenix Mercury. She added that she will thank everyone who advocated for her release in person when she plays for the Mercury.
