Led by their sophomore sensation, Stephen Curry, the Wildcats embarked on a thrilling journey, toppling one basketball giant after another. But for Curry and the Davidson Wildcats, it was a bittersweet moment as their remarkable journey came to an end just shy of the coveted Final Four. When they encountered the No. 1 seed, Kansas, their hopes and dreams were shattered. They were just one 3-pointer away and – you guessed it – their senior point guard missed.
Davidson narrowly miss the Final Four
Davidson was having a magical run in the NCAA and was looking unstoppable. Stephen Curry was the name of their trump card that led the underdog team on a captivating journey to reach the Elite Eight. Along with Curry, the team had a trusted senior point guard, Jason Richards. Curry and Richard formed an inseparable bond that still stands strong today. Coach Bob McKillop said they were a perfect match that complemented each other’s strengths. They even had their own quirky celebration, a reminder of the joy they brought to the game.

However, destiny had other plans for the two friends. Davidson was playing against Kansas, which was the best team at the time. They were the dark horses as nobody expected them to beat the No. 1 seed. Davidson came very close with a score of 57-59 with 16 seconds left on the clock. The ball was with Curry, and everyone was hoping he makes the shot. But Kansas anticipated that and doubled-teamed him, leaving him no option but to pass the ball. And doing that the ball was found with their senior point guard, Jason Richards.
In this heart-wrenching moment of the NCAA Tournament, Richards missed the shot that could have sent Davidson to the Final Four. He still regrets it today and spoke about it on Curry’s documentary, Underrated. He said, “It really didn’t hit me till the locker room. It’s like the family, you know… That’s the last thing you don’t wanna do is let your teammate down.”

Richards had dreams of making it to the NBA, but fate had other plans. The promising point guard’s aspirations were cut short by a series of devastating injuries, leaving him to watch from the sidelines as his college teammate, Curry, ascended to NBA greatness with the Golden State Warriors.

The basketball careers of Curry and Richards diverged after that critical moment. While Curry’s star continued to rise, Richards struggled to recover from multiple anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears and eventually had to bid farewell to his playing days.
