In 2019, Mike Scott dove into the courtside seats during a Philadelphia 76ers game, grabbed a fan’s drink, took a sip, and returned to the court. The NBA reviewed the incident but decided against fining him. Sixers fans have now witnessed a similar moment, this time involving a far bigger name.

LeBron James crashed into longtime Philadelphia season-ticket holder Troy Clemons while chasing a pass against the Chicago Bulls on November 2. After spilling Clemons’ red wine, James took a sip from the cup before returning to the game. The moment quickly became one of the night’s biggest talking points.
But the most interesting part of the incident came after the game, when both men explained what happened. James admitted he had taken a sip, while Clemons revealed that he was not particularly bothered by the interaction.
“I spilled some of his wine. I crashed into him, spilled some of his wine. So, I wanted to see if it was worth it on my arm, man. You know, how good it was. It was all right.”
That was James’ explanation after Philadelphia’s 126-107 win over Chicago. The 41-year-old had just finished a game in which he recorded 15 points, seven rebounds, and nine assists, but his courtside interaction had quickly taken on a life of its own.
And while the moment raised questions about whether the NBA could discipline him, the league’s response to similar incidents offers a clearer picture of what might happen next.
A courtside collision that ended with a sip of wine
The incident unfolded during the third quarter, with Philadelphia holding an 11-point lead. James was chasing a transition pass from Tyrese Maxey when his momentum carried him into the courtside seats.
Clemons was sitting nearby with a cup of red wine when James collided with him. The drink spilled, and James apologized before taking a sip from the cup and handing it back.
Clemons later described the interaction to ESPN’s Kris Rhim.
“LeBron crashed into me, he grabbed me, he said ‘My bad.’ My drink spilled everywhere. He took my drink from me and he basically just took a sip of it, gave it back and ran back on the court.”
The broadcast booth immediately reacted to the unusual moment. One commentator was not entirely convinced about what James had just consumed.
“That better be non alcoholic beverage.”
Another broadcaster played along with the situation, joking about James’ reputation as a wine connoisseur.
“He thinks he’s a bit of a wine connoisseur.”
The first commentator then returned to the incident, sounding more surprised than concerned.
“LeBron is drinking a fan’s drink. Are you kidding me? You can’t do that.”
The exchange captured the absurdity of the moment, but Clemons’ reaction afterward was just as interesting.
The fan’s reaction was not what many expected
Clemons, a longtime Sixers season-ticket holder, had no complaints about the interaction. He was more interested in the fact that James was playing for Philadelphia than in the drink that had been spilled.
“I’m just glad for him to be here. I’m not worried about the wine getting on me. But I appreciate everything the Sixers is doing. And I’m here to have a good time, man. I appreciate it.”
Clemons also revealed that he did not keep the cup as a souvenir. Despite having a drink taken by one of the most famous players in basketball, he decided to throw it away.
“At the end of the day, he another man like me and he’s a regular. I mean, he’s LeBron, but at the end of the day, I threw that cup in the trash.”
That reaction is a big reason why the incident has remained lighthearted. Clemons was not looking for an apology or demanding that the league take action. He was simply happy to be part of a memorable moment.
But the interaction also raised a question that has followed James throughout his career: Does a superstar receive different treatment from the league than an ordinary player?
The NBA has already seen this happen before
James’ latest interaction with a fan is not the first time an NBA player has taken a drink from someone sitting courtside.
In March 2019, Mike Scott found himself in a similar situation while playing for Philadelphia against the Milwaukee Bucks. Scott dove into the stands while chasing a loose ball, grabbed a fan’s beverage, took a sip, and returned to the court.
The NBA reviewed the incident but ultimately decided against fining Scott. The 76ers also chose not to discipline him.
That precedent is particularly relevant because Scott’s incident involved actual consumption, rather than simply pretending to take a sip.
James had a similar moment in 2017, when he playfully grabbed a beer bottle from a vendor during a playoff game against Toronto. He made a motion as if he were drinking from it before handing it back.
The difference is that James did not actually drink the beer in that instance.
The league’s response to Scott’s incident suggests that a spontaneous interaction with a fan is unlikely to result in punishment on its own. However, the NBA still has the authority to discipline players for conduct it considers detrimental to the league.
Could LeBron actually face a fine or suspension?
The NBA Constitution gives the Commissioner broad authority to discipline players for conduct during games. Article 35(c) allows the Commissioner to fine or suspend a player for conduct considered prejudicial or detrimental to the league or professional basketball.
The provision does not specifically prohibit a player from taking a sip of a fan’s drink. Instead, it gives the Commissioner discretion to decide whether a particular incident crosses a line.
That distinction matters in James’ case. The league has the authority to punish him, but that does not mean it has a reason to do so.
According to reporting from Marca, the NBA reviewed the incident and decided against a fine. The 76ers also imposed no internal discipline.
There is also no credible evidence that suspension calls are mounting against James. While some social media users criticized the interaction, those reactions do not establish that the league is considering further action.
The precedent involving Scott points in the same direction. Both players took a sip from a fan’s drink during a game, and neither was fined.
For James, the incident appears to have ended with a spilled drink, a brief sip, and a few laughs.
LeBron’s Philadelphia season has taken a different turn
The moment also comes during a season in which James has been adjusting to life with the 76ers.
Philadelphia signed James in the summer of 2026 after he left the Los Angeles Lakers. The team envisioned him playing more of a connecting role alongside Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, and Joel Embiid.
Through his first five games, James averaged 16.4 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. His performance against Chicago reflected that role, with nine assists and seven rebounds alongside 15 points.
The 76ers have also been enjoying a strong start to the season. Their win over Chicago improved their record to 7-1, tied for the best in the NBA.
James has spoken about the importance of enjoying the game during the later stages of his career. After the incident, he explained why small moments like the interaction with Clemons matter to him.
“Listen, I mean, it’s a long marathon. If you don’t find ways to have fun throughout it, even though you’re working, even though you’re locked in, then it could wear on you. So for me, especially at this point in my career too, being able to just appreciate the moments, the small moments. These fans are great to us. We try to be great to them as well by playing the game the right way, playing the game hard, and then also just being a showman as well. But it was a great game for us.”
That explanation offers a different perspective on the viral moment. James was not trying to create a controversy. He was describing an interaction with a fan that happened during a game his team was winning comfortably.
And the 76ers have plenty of reasons to enjoy their current run.
Philadelphia pulls away from Chicago
The 76ers defeated the Bulls 126-107 at Xfinity Mobile Arena on November 2, extending their winning streak to four games.
Philadelphia led 64-59 at halftime before extending the advantage in the third quarter. James helped push the lead to 17 points with a layup, and the 76ers entered the fourth quarter ahead 90-79.
Chicago briefly threatened to make things interesting, but Maxey took over in the final period. He scored 15 of his game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter, helping Philadelphia pull away.
Brown finished with 25 points and 11 rebounds, while rookie VJ Edgecombe added 21 points. Embiid contributed 15 points and eight rebounds despite entering the game with a foot injury.
James finished with 15 points, seven rebounds, and nine assists on 6-of-13 shooting. His plus-30 rating was the second-best on the team, and he helped Philadelphia control the game with his passing and transition play.
The 76ers outscored Chicago 36-28 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
For James, the night ended with another victory, a memorable interaction with a fan, and a reminder that even the smallest moments can become major talking points when the NBA’s biggest star is involved.
And if the Mike Scott precedent is any indication, the league is unlikely to make much more of it than that.
