Marc Stad is acquiring majority control of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx for $4.5 billion, buying out Marc Lore’s majority stake while Alex Rodriguez raises his own stake and remains in leadership roles.

Alex Rodriguez, along with Lore and Stad, has been central to the Timberwolves’ ownership story since 2021. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Rodriguez has opted to increase his investment rather than step back, ensuring he stays on as alternate governor for the Timberwolves and governor for the Lynx.
This confirms Rodriguez’s commitment. He has decided not to leave during this reorganization. Instead, he is escalating his involvement.
The other major move belongs to Marc Lore, who will retain a minority stake, but the exact breakdown of shares between Stad and Rodriguez is still being finalized.
Stad, already a minority owner, spent months negotiating to acquire Lore’s majority stake. Lore’s exit is tied to his focus on taking his food technology company, Wonder Group, public in the coming year.
The agreement is pending approval by the NBA Board of Governors, who will convene on September 15 and 16. Upon approval, Stad’s wife, Elisa Stad, will become the Timberwolves’ governor, while Rodriguez continues in his roles with both franchises.
The Front Office to Stay Unchanged
The front office, consisting of president Tim Connelly, general manager Matt Lloyd, and head coach Chris Finch, will remain unchanged under the new ownership structure.
This continuity reflects the franchise’s recent success. The Timberwolves have reached the playoffs in each of the last five seasons, advancing to the Western Conference Finals in 2024 and 2025.

Minnesota is now a luxury tax team, with Anthony Edwards leading the roster. In 2024–25, owners made limited luxury tax payments, but this season the team is expected to pay again, signaling continued investment in winning.
This offseason, Minnesota acquired LaMelo Ball from the Charlotte Hornets to pair with Edwards in the backcourt. The team also pursued LeBron James last offseason, but he ultimately chose the Philadelphia 76ers.
Timberwolves’ Historic Valuation
The $4.5 billion valuation ranks the Timberwolves fourth among the largest franchise sales in NBA history, behind the Boston Celtics’ $6.1 billion sale in 2025 and two Los Angeles Lakers transactions worth $12.5 billion and $10 billion.
This figure is especially striking compared to Minnesota’s past. Lore and Rodriguez first purchased a stake in 2021 for $1.5 billion before taking full ownership in June 2025. The franchise has nearly tripled in value since 2021, driven by league growth and Minnesota’s playoff success under Lore and Rodriguez.
Fans are now asking whether Stad will follow the aggressive spending model established by Lore and Rodriguez. Early signs suggest continuity, with no indication of major changes in approach.
