When you are part of an Indiana sports franchise, challenge becomes passion, just like the fans here. The same has been for Taelon Peter, who, after the preseason night against the OKCy Thunder, said: “I’ve always been an offensive player. I’ve always been a guy who runs around and shoots 3s gets out and dunks, but I’ve never really put the time and effort into defense. I’ve kind of surprised myself with what I’m able to do on the defensive end.” So, there’s no better time than now to know the 23-year-old sensation!

Peter grabbed headlines with his 18 points, 2 steals. If that wasn’t enough, he had 5 rebounds and assists each in the limited 27 minutes he played. That stat line grabbed headlines for a rookie drafted 54th overall. What it hinted at was bigger. A player who climbed took an unconventional college route and now might be ready to stretch a two-way deal into real NBA minutes. This is Taelon Peter’s moment, but how exactly did he build this to make it last?

Who is Taelon Peter?

Taelon Peter stands 6-foot-4, weighs 185 lbs, and at 23 years old, he’s already turning preseason minutes into headlines. Born on February 27, 2002, Peter has built his reputation on pure capacity. Before landing with the Pacers, he took one of the most unconventional paths to the NBA.

After a brief stint of 6 games with Tennessee Tech University, Peter came back to his hometown to play for three years at Arkansas Tech in 2021-22. Next, he moved to Liberty. By now, Peter was done being overlooked. At Liberty, he owned up the Sixth Man role and had shot an impressive 57.8% from the field and 45.3% from three, catching scouts’ attention. He also helped the Flames get tournament championships in Conference USA. “First and foremost, I’m a winner,… I do whatever the team needs to win.”

With that passion, it is bound to catch attention, and Indiana caught it well during draft workouts. Now, that same versatility of defending and creating is translating to Indiana’s fast-paced system. As for Peter’s ethnic roots?

Those Arkansas gyms were his training grounds, places where Peter’s foundation as a shooter and competitor was built long before the spotlight found him. And the credit for instilling him with that competitive mentality goes to only one woman. His mother.

Who are Taelon Peter’s parents?

Peter was raised by his mother, who has been a central figure in his life and the one who held everything together for her three kids. While details about his father remain private, Peter has spoken before about how his mom’s commitment and strength shaped his focus both on and off the court.

Growing up in a single-parent household taught him discipline early. It is also safe to assume that every practice was about more than basketball, as it also was about honoring the effort that got him there. His mother’s support has been a quiet constant throughout his climb to the NBA. And speaking of that climb?

Taelon Peter’s career

Peter’s college story is one of reinvention. In Arkansas, he scored over 1,300 points and became one of the most highly efficient scorers in the country! His confidence returned, his jumper sharpened, and by the time he landed at Liberty, he had matured into a complete player.

Selected 54th overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, Peter entered the league with modest expectations. The kind that quickly disappears once the games start. In just his second preseason outing, Peter led the Pacers to a 116-101 win over the Thunder, hitting 4-of-8 from deep, grabbing 5 rebounds, and adding 5 assists and 2 steals. He did it all in 27 minutes. “I surprised myself,” Peter admitted post-game for his defensive skills, too.

Even with stars like Tyrese Haliburton sidelined, Peter has used every opportunity to prove he can keep the offense flowing while bringing energy to the perimeter. And the numbers back it up.

Taelon Peter’s contract

Taelon Peter signed a two-year, two-way contract with the Indiana Pacers after being selected 54th overall in the 2025 NBA Draft. In the NBA, players who are signed on two-way contracts are limited to 50 regular-season games with their respective NBA team. While exact salary details haven’t been disclosed, standard two-way rookie deals typically range between $570,000 and $600,000 annually.

If Peter can prove his worth, he surely can fill up his pocket because an NBA two-way player earns a good amount for each day spent on the NBA roster. What adds to his benefits is, Indiana’s guard depth is currently thin because of injuries. So, Peter’s combination of outside shooting and defensive effort might earn him consistent NBA time sooner than expected. And if he keeps shooting the way he has, the Pacers may have found another hidden gem.

From Russellville to Indiana, Peter’s journey has been anything but predictable. Every transfer, adjustment, and night spent proving himself has led to this moment. And now, in a Pacers jersey, he’s showing the league what belief looks like when it finally meets opportunity.
