Talk about a special night for Luka Doncic! The Dallas Mavericks superstar wasn’t just on fire last night, dropping an insane 47 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists in just 35 minutes of play, but what made it even sweeter was having his mom, Mirjam Poterbin, cheering him on from the stands as he led his team to a dominating 125-107 victory over the Houston Rockets.

Now, Mirjam’s not your typical basketball mom. At 50 years old, she’s also turned heads as an Instagram model. Fans were definitely loving her energy as she celebrated Luka’s incredible 47-point performance. But hold on, things haven’t always been sunshine and rainbows for the Doncic family. In fact, as recently as last year the legal feud between the mom and son dissipated with the final details still not in the public domain. But here’s what we know so far.

Legal Woes Between Luka & His Mum

Luka and his mum, Mirjam were in a battle over Luka’s branding rights. Doncic initially granted Poterbin control of the “Luka Doncic 7” trademark. This trademark dispute meant Luka couldn’t fully control his name, brand, or even his charity-related things. So, during EuroBasket 2022, Luka went to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (that’s the USPTO for short) and tried to get rid of the “Luka Doncic 7” trademark his mom owned by filing a petition.

The good news for Doncic fans is that this legal hurdle has been resolved, albeit very quietly. According to USPTO records, Doncic terminated the petition to cancel the trademark on December 5th, filed just a few months prior in September. Neither Doncic nor Poterbin’s legal representatives have commented on the matter but after seeing her cheer him on today, it seems that the energy in the Doncic household has changed for the better.

The Story of Mirjam Poterbin

Most people watching Luka Doncic get drafted in 2018 might have thought the gorgeous woman cheering him on was his girlfriend. Nope, that was his mom, Mirjam Poterbin. Before becoming an Instagram star with a growing brand, Mirjam was a busy bee. She juggled a modeling and dancing career while running two beauty salons all on her own. On top of that, she raised Luka as a single mom after her divorce from Sasa Doncic when Luka was just eight years old.

Mirjam’s Instagram is a love letter to her son, filled with photos of his achievements and family time. While Mirjam has kept her dating life under wraps, her focus on raising Luka as a single mum is clear. After her divorce in 2009, she poured her energy into Luka’s balling dream which even meant moving to Spain in 2016 when Luka joined NBA Madrid.

The Dallas Mavericks are all set for their showdown with the Golden State Warriors on April 3 at the Chase Center. While there may have trouble in paradise before, it’s safe to say if she isn’t too busy with her engagements, Luka’s mom will be cheering him on from the sidelines.
