At 6-foot-6 with a 6-11 wingspan, 230 pounds, and a defensive IQ, Barnhizer has managed to make his presence felt in the preseason games. Against the Pacers, he contributed 16 points, 11 rebounds, and 1 assist in 38 minutes in the Thunder’s recent 101-116 loss.

The family emphasizes hard work and strategic thinking, which, by the way, are traits Brooks carries onto the court since the beginning of his basketball career.

Brooks Barnhizer’s Career

At South Bend High, Barnhizer’s scoring was creative at best. He averaged a state-high 32.7 points per game as a senior, putting him on the radar as a three-star recruit. That curve led him to Northwestern, where he gradually advanced into a full-time starter and a defensive stalwart.

Playing for the Northwestern Wildcats, in his junior year, Barnhizer was a full-time starter, averaging 14.6 points on an average (497 points in total), 7.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.8 steals per game in 36.7 minutes. But he was injured in his senior year, which curtailed his game days to 17. He had a foot injury, yet he managed to improve his stats from his junior year, averaging 17.1 points, 8.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.3 steals, and 1.1 blocks.

Next, Barnhizer entered the 2025 NBA Draft with a reputation as a high-IQ defender with room to grow offensively. The Oklahoma City Thunder selected him 44th overall, and for the 2025–26 season, he signed a two-way contract. While not expected to dominate the rotation immediately in the regular season, preseason games, including a start against the Pacers, are giving him extended runs to showcase his defensive instincts and adaptability.

Brooks Barnhizer’s Contract

For the 2025–26 season, Barnhizer is on a two-way contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder. While specifics of his salary aren’t widely reported, two-way deals typically offer a split between NBA and G-League compensation, providing a platform to earn a full-time spot through performance and development. Barnhizer can play a max of 50 games of the 82 played in the regular season, while he won’t be able to suit up if the Thunder makes it to the playoffs again.

Preseason minutes may be the testing ground, and if he manages to keep his eyes on him, expect more NBA roster calls. His records, like first Northwestern player to post career numbers of 1,000 points, 500+ rebounds, and 100+ steals since 2014-19’s Vic Law, reflect that he is promising. Thunder fans will be hoping into these and expect Barnhizer to fire whenever required. Being a two-way player, he knows the stage will be smaller, so the 23-year-old might not let any slip-ups!
