The Washington Wizards faced off against the Golden State Warriors in an inter-conference battle tonight, with the Dubs looking to stay relevant in the Play-In tournament picture with a win. However, everything went sideways when star Wizards guard Trae Young suddenly exited the game early. Here’s what happened.

With about 7:53 left in the third quarter, Young collided with Warriors rookie forward Will Richard, immediately sending him to the floor. Young stayed down for a few moments before he eventually got back up by himself, walking off the court and immediately heading to the locker room.
Soon afterwards, the team announced that he was dealing with a right quad contusion, and will not be returning for the rest of the night.
Status alert: Trae Young (quad) won’t return Monday.

How Did Trae Young Perform Before Leaving?
Trae Young had been having an outstanding game before leaving tonight. In 21 minutes, Young scored 21 points on 7-10 shooting, adding on five assists, two rebounds, as well as a block and a steal. This was shaping up to be one of his best games this season before his exit.
Young is averaging 17.7 points per game this season, but has significantly improved upon his efficiency, shooting 44.3% from the field and 32% from three. However, his playmaking has fallen a bit, going down to 8.2 per game from 11.6 per game last season.
How Did the Washington Wizards Adjust Without Young?
With Trae Young exiting the game due to his injury, the team quickly looked at reserve guards Sharife Cooper and Jaden Harden to fill his minutes, but neither was able to be productive. Most of the scoring load tonight was carried by the forward duo of Bilal Coulibaly and Will Riley.

The two scored 21 points each, combining for 12 rebounds and nine assists. Unfortunately, their efforts weren’t enough, and the Warriors completely ran them over. De’Anthony Melton and Kristaps Porzingis scored 27 and 30 points each, with Porzingis doing so in just 25 minutes off the bench.
Porzingis in particular was completely unstoppable, especially as the Wizards could only run Tristan Vukcevic 15 minutes tonight. He scored at will due to size mismatches, and even made his way to the line for 14 shots, which he made 13 of.
Young’s tenure with the Wizards so far hasn’t been the most successful. After being traded by the Atlanta Hawks before the trade deadline, the guard is yet to win a single game in a Wizards uniform, especially with them struggling due to a plethora of injuries.
For now, all the team can do is hope that his injury isn’t too severe. Young’s next chance to play will be against the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday.
