Bam Adebayo walked into Tuesday’s do-or-die play-in game as the undisputed heartbeat of the Miami Heat- the guy putting up 20.1 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per night across 73 games, while leading the squad in rebounding and win shares (6.4). A three-time All-Star and five-time All-Defensive selection, he’s the anchor who makes Miami’s defense click.

The Heat will be replaying this one in their nightmares all summer. Their season ended with LaMelo Ball’s dagger, but the real gut punch came earlier: losing Bam Adebayo- their defensive anchor- to a brutal lower back injury in the first half.

The incident happened early in the second quarter. LaMelo Ball drove and missed a layup attempt, landing on the floor. As Adebayo tried to keep the ball alive, Ball’s hand swiped at his left foot/ankle, sending the Heat center crashing hard onto his tailbone. He hit the deck awkwardly, grimaced in obvious pain, and stayed down as the game continued for a moment. It was ugly.

Trainers rushed over. Bam eventually got up and limped gingerly to the locker room under his own power for further checks.

He had dropped 6 points on a perfect 3-of-3 shooting with 3 rebounds in just 11 minutes. He was officially ruled out for the rest of the night with a lower back injury. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra didn’t hold back afterward, saying LaMelo Ball should’ve been tossed for the play.

Without their defensive anchor- the versatile big who switches onto guards and protects the rim like few others- the Heat still battled but fell 127-126 in overtime. Miami hung tough, shooting efficiently and protecting the ball, but the void was impossible to ignore.

This freak fall hits harder because it’s not entirely new territory for Bam. He’s battled nagging issues before, from a thumb surgery that sidelined him for weeks in 2021-22, to neck strain in the 2020 Finals bubble run, to various hip and back tweaks that have tested his toughness in past postseasons.

The guy plays through more pain than most, yet his availability in big moments has sometimes been the difference for Miami’s championship pushes.

Heat fans felt that LaMelo Ball intentionally grabbed onto Adebayo’s leg as he fell down. The Hornets star did make contact, which put the Heat star in an awkward position. Some fans thought it should have been reviewed further, with a possible flagrant foul call.

However, officials didn’t deem Ball’s involvement in the incident as unnatural at first glance. They never went to the monitor to watch it over from a better vantage point.

Without their defensive anchor, the Heat suffered a painful overtime loss.

It also echoes the brutal luck other stars have faced. Just last year, in the 2025 playoffs, Boston’s Jayson Tatum suffered a devastating right Achilles rupture in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Knicks. A non-contact nightmare that ended his season on the spot and kept him out for most of 2025-26.

LaMelo Ball hits the dagger to send the Hornets through

The young Charlotte Hornets put up a valiant display against a disciplined Miami Heat team. They went through a rough patch. After taking an early lead, Miami was unable to sustain its momentum.

They outscored the Hornets 31-25 in the fourth to force overtime. Even without Bam Adebayo, the Heat managed themselves fantastically.

They shot 47.6% from the field and made 16 threes. Furthermore, the Heat turned the ball over just seven times while recording 32 assists. They played a splendid game for being down one Bam Adebayo. Andrew Wiggins added 27 points while point guard Davion Mitchell scored 28.

But the Hornets refused to fold. LaMelo Ball went off for 30 points and 10 assists, including the game-winning layup with 4.7 seconds left in overtime. Miles Bridges was huge with 28 points and a massive game-saving block on Mitchell’s buzzer attempt.

The veteran forward scored 13 of his 28 in the fourth quarter and overtime, helping the Hornets survive Miami’s late flurry.

Coby White and Brandon Miller also combined for 42 points and 10 threes made between them.

Charlotte’s work isn’t finished. They’ll host the loser of the 76ers vs. Magic for the final playoff spot. If they punch through, it’ll be their first postseason trip since 2016. For a young group showing real promise, this win feels like a turning point.
