Before Stephen Curry, the NBA had never seen someone who could shoot beyond the arc the way he does. He has achieved everything that a basketball player dreams about. Four championships, two MVPs, Finals MVP, and whatnot. Outside the game, too, Curry has expanded his wings by wearing the hats of an author and movie producer. And if basketball wasn’t enough, he’s started earning recognition in those fields too!

Curry added another accolade off the court as The Baddest Speechwriter of All claimed the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. The short documentary, co-created with two-time Oscar winner Ben Proudfoot, topped the nonfiction field.

The announcement came Tuesday night in Park City, Utah, during the festival’s main awards ceremony, which also honored fiction, international fiction, and animation entries.

Steph took to his X handle and announced: “Proud of the entire @Unanimous_World team for this one. I’m honored to have co-directed ‘The Baddest Speechwriter of All’ alongside @bgproudfoot, and elevate the story of the great Dr. Clarence B. Jones. Thank you Sundance for the recognition.”

However, NBA duties kept Steph Curry away from the ceremony. Even so, timing worked in his favor. The Golden State Warriors faced the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City the same night. As a result, Ben Proudfoot confirmed the duo planned to celebrate together after the game.

“Stephen and I are jumping for joy (him a lot higher than I) with this extraordinary recognition, especially as the final sun slowly sets on Sundance in Park City,” Proudfoot shared. “Clarence B. Jones’ extraordinary story feels tailor-made to this very moment. He calls on all of us to follow in his footsteps in times of injustice: exit our comfort zones, live with purpose, and non-violently kick a–.”

Ben Proudfoot further highlighted the personal impact of working alongside Stephen Curry. He explained that the collaboration pushed his growth as a filmmaker and opened the door to a narrative he otherwise would never have discovered. Therefore, he credited both Curry and Clarence for the opportunity.

What is the story of Stephen Curry’s The Baddest Speechwriter of All?

The Baddest Speechwriter of All focuses on Clarence B. Jones, a veteran lawyer, trusted counselor, and the principal architect behind several defining addresses delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. At age 93, Jones looks back on the sacrifices and hidden realities tied to shaping history. Therefore, the film offers a close-range perspective on the Civil Rights Movement, grounded in memory, consequence, and lived experience rather than distant retelling.

Meanwhile, production duties were shared across major creative players. Ben Proudfoot led the project through Breakwater Studios. Stephen Curry and Erick Peyton produced via Unanimous Media. In addition, Gigi Pritzker and Elizabeth Goodstein Bengio served as executive producers under Madison Wells.

At the same time, Curry and Proudfoot share a successful creative history. Earlier, they collaborated on The Queen of Basketball, centered on the late Lucy Harris, widely viewed as the greatest women’s basketball player ever. Curry joined Shaquille O’Neal as an executive producer on that Oscar-winning short. That 2021 project also delivered Proudfoot his first Academy Award.
