Dillon Brooks’ turbulent season just gained a visual chapter. The Phoenix Suns forward has already endured a suspension, a fractured hand, and weeks away from the court. Now newly released police bodycam footage has added another layer to the story. And the exchange captured on camera quickly turned into one of the most talked-about NBA clips online.

During the early hours of Friday morning, Brooks was arrested on suspicion of DUI in Scottsdale, Arizona. The incident happened around 1:00 AM on March 6 during a traffic stop conducted by officers from the Scottsdale Police Department.

However, the footage released afterward shows that the conversation between Brooks and the officers quickly took an unusual turn. According to the video obtained by TMZ Sports, the responding officer immediately commented on a strong odor coming from Brooks’ vehicle. “To be honest with you, smells like a dispensary in your car.”

When asked about the last time he consumed marijuana, Brooks responded that he had not smoked in “six months.” He also denied having any contraband in the vehicle when officers pressed him about the smell.

Despite the suspicion raised during the stop, Brooks appeared to register a 0.0 blood alcohol content on a preliminary breathalyzer test. “Two zeroes, which I anticipated,” the officer said in the footage. Even with the clean BAC result, the arrest proceeded under suspicion of possible drug impairment, according to local reports. Authorities later clarified that the substance Brooks was suspected to be under the influence of was neither alcohol nor marijuana based on the initial findings.

The video also captured a tense exchange about the reason for the traffic stop. Officers claimed Brooks failed to maintain his lane several times while driving. Brooks pushed back on that claim. “I’m riding in the car with you watching you drive, and you’re doing the exact same thing,” Brooks responded.

The interaction became even more delicate when officers moved to place him in handcuffs. Brooks warned them about his recent surgery. “Had surgery on it… my left forearm.” That injury has already kept the 30-year-old forward off the court since late February.

Dillon Brooks’ Arrest Amidst Suns’ Playoff Push

The timing of the incident adds another complication for both Brooks and the Phoenix Suns. Brooks had been enjoying one of the best offensive seasons of his career before suffering the left-hand fracture on February 21 during a game against the Orlando Magic. At the time of the injury, he was averaging a career-high 20.9 points per game while emerging as a key scoring option in Phoenix’s rotation.

Because of the surgery, Brooks was already expected to miss several weeks with a possible return window sometime in late March or early April. The Suns, meanwhile, are fighting to stabilize their position in the Western Conference playoff race. Entering the weekend, Phoenix was sitting in the seventh spot, trying to avoid slipping into the play-in range.

That situation makes Brooks’ timeline especially important. So far, there is still uncertainty about what comes next legally. After being taken into custody, Brooks was transported to Scottsdale City Jail and released at approximately 3:30 AM. He has not been formally charged as of now.

The Suns organization also issued a brief statement acknowledging the situation. “We are in the process of gathering more information regarding the situation involving Dillon Brooks,” the team said. “We have no further comment at this time.”

For Brooks, the immediate focus remains split between two battles. One is the legal situation surrounding the arrest. The other is the recovery process that could determine whether he returns in time to help Phoenix during the final stretch of the 2025-26 season.
