A routine transition play suddenly turned into one of the most unsettling moments of the Atlanta Hawks vs. Brooklyn Nets game. The whistle stopped the action in the fourth quarter, but this time it was not because of a foul or turnover. Instead, an NBA official was the one down on the court.
The scary sequence happened late in the game at State Farm Arena on March 12. Sideline referee Sha’Rae Mitchell was sprinting up the floor during transition when she ran directly into a courtside camera operator positioned near fans along the sideline.

The collision immediately dropped Mitchell to the floor and forced officials to pause the game. Mitchell had been running back in transition as possession changed when the moment unfolded. In a split second, she collided at full speed with the cameraman stationed near courtside seats to capture fan reactions during the broadcast.
The impact was heavy enough to knock the referee to the court. Mitchell quickly grabbed her head in pain and briefly sat down near the scorer’s table as trainers and fellow officials checked on her.
Video of the incident quickly circulated online.

Mitchell also appeared frustrated with the positioning of the cameraman after the collision. Still, the operator had been stationed there intentionally to film fan interactions for the broadcast.
Fortunately, the moment ended without serious injury. Mitchell did not require treatment for external wounds and was able to compose herself before returning to officiate the remainder of the game.
The incident marked an unusual moment for the young official. Mitchell joined the NBA’s full-time referee staff in October 2023 after previously working NBA games as a non-staff official and gaining experience in the G League, WNBA, and college basketball. She has now officiated more than a hundred NBA games during her tenure.
While rare, on-court collisions involving officials and courtside personnel are not unheard of in professional basketball. Fast-paced transition plays frequently push referees close to the sideline where cameras, photographers, and broadcast crews operate within tight spaces.
Because of that environment, moments like Mitchell’s collision occasionally occur when officials sprint alongside the play.
Atlanta Hawks barely scrape past the Brooklyn Nets
Meanwhile, the frightening moment briefly overshadowed a competitive matchup between Atlanta and Brooklyn. The Hawks ultimately secured a 108-97 victory at State Farm Arena. Atlanta improved to 35-31 with the win, while the Nets dropped to 17-49.
Brooklyn entered the game without its leading scorer, Michael Porter Jr., who was sidelined with a right ankle sprain. Despite the absence, the Nets still managed to keep the contest tight for most of the night.
Atlanta led 57-50 at halftime. However, Brooklyn briefly grabbed an 83-82 lead early in the fourth quarter before the Hawks responded with a decisive run to regain control.
Turnovers ultimately proved costly for Brooklyn. The Nets committed 19 giveaways, which Atlanta converted into 29 fast-break points. Jalen Johnson delivered one of the standout performances of the night with 21 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. Fourteen of those points came in the second half as the Hawks closed the game.
Atlanta also benefited from strong bench production. Zaccharie Risacher scored 19 points off the bench, Nickeil Alexander-Walker added 18, and CJ McCollum contributed 14. Meanwhile, Josh Minott produced a career-high 24 points for Brooklyn. The victory extended Atlanta’s winning streak to eight games, which stood as the longest active streak in the NBA at the time.
With Johnson emerging as a centerpiece alongside a promising young core, Atlanta’s recent surge suggests the franchise may be building momentum at a critical stage of the season.
For Mitchell, however, the night will likely be remembered for a very different reason. The collision served as a reminder of how quickly unpredictable moments can occur on an NBA floor, even for the officials tasked with keeping the game under control.
