Coco Jones was mid-photoshoot on a Manhattan street when a woman walked up and unleashed racist insults. The Grammy-winning singer and wife of Donovan Mitchell did not walk away or fire back in the moment. What she did instead is the part that matters.

Instead, she kept calm and expressed her pride. It has ultimately become the defining moment of the viral footage.
The encounter happened during New York Fashion Week in early September. Jones was in Manhattan for the Tommy Hilfiger Spring/Summer 2027 show at the Plaza Hotel. She was posing for photographs near Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, near the Plaza Hotel, when the woman approached.
An onlooker who filmed her from a distance captured the exchange.
At first, Coco Jones thought it was praise coming her way. She looked at the person, who initially sounded like an admirer, and said, “Thank you,” with a face full of a smile. But it didn’t last long; the heckler’s next words dimmed it.
“Disgusting! God! You look so…black,” the woman [heckler] said.
“I am black, and I am proud,” Jones responded, posing in front of a bus.
Jones did not engage in a back-and-forth with her. She remained composed as the insults continued.
The video gained wider attention on the internet several days after the encounter. Jones has not publicly addressed the incident in a separate statement, so the footage itself shows how she responded to the abuse.
The confrontation also brings extra attention to Coco Jones’ experiences as a Black woman in the entertainment industry. To start off, this wasn’t the only time she encountered discrimination based on color. Moreover, she has also addressed it at various points in her career.
Being a celebrated artist and wife of Donovan Mitchell, she still had to go through it.
Donovan Mitchell’s wife, Coco Jones, has challenged colorism throughout her career
Before becoming a Grammy-winning R&B artist, she gained recognition through Disney’s 2012 musical film Let It Shine, playing Roxie. But her early success did not translate into a growth ladder in Hollywood. She later spoke publicly about the professional barriers she encountered after her time with Disney.
In a 2020 video, Jones opened up about the setbacks she faced after her early success with Disney. She repeated how she was “not marketable”, stressing the state of beauty standards.
Jones has also spoken about colorism in Hollywood, where darker-skinned Black women can face fewer opportunities and different standards. Those experiences have shaped how she talks about her career. She once noted, “I was an employee,” adding that the industry “didn’t know what to do with a Black girl who didn’t fit into…formulas.”
Coco Jones eventually returned to the spotlight through music and acting.
That history gives her response on the Manhattan sidewalk added context. Jones has previously spoken about the way skin tone can shape the opportunities and treatment Black women receive.
In this instance, she faced an explicit insult directed at her appearance. But it didn’t shake her up. Instead, she answered, asserting her identity rather than engaging with the heckler’s premise.
The viral video offers no indication that the confrontation escalated beyond the verbal exchange. The woman’s identity has not been established. And there is no publicly available document to prove that formal action was taken related to the incident.
What remains clear is Jones’ response. Faced with a racist insult in the middle of a public photoshoot, she stood her ground and continued without allowing the heckler to define the moment.
