Throughout human history, one of the highest achievements a man could have was to have a statue in their honor. And in the world of sports, especially the NBA, this has become the ultimate form of immortality. From Michael Jordan to Dwyane Wade, all the greats have been honored with one. Despite that, Houston Rockets forward Kevin Durant has strong opinions regarding statues.

It all started when former Boston Celtics star Paul Pierce, on the No Fouls Given podcast, suggested that KD deserves a statue for his time with the Golden State Warriors. “I’m giving Durant a statue in Golden State, too. I got two chips and two Finals MVPs. Durant gets a statue in Golden State,” Pierce suggested. The Slim Reaper, however, disagreed with the NBA legend.

“I passionately disagree. A lil mural outside the men’s bathroom maybe but even that may be too much. Them banners are enough if I’m being honest,” he wrote in a now-deleted tweet. The veteran superstar has always faced criticism regarding his decision to join the Warriors at their peak.

Even though Durant did an impressive job of adjusting with the rest of the crew, winning two championships in the process, not to mention winning a Finals MVP, many believe that the Dubs could’ve done the same without him. And with his latest statement, it seems even he doesn’t view his contribution during that time in a good light.

Meanwhile, as if that wasn’t harsh enough, when a fan suggested that he, without a doubt, deserved a statue with the OKC Thunder, Kevin Durant even shut that thought down with his response. “Brother, just erase me from the history books,” he replied to a fan in a tweet that has since been deleted, the same as the last one, as the veteran might’ve deemed his response a little too dramatic.

Well, this isn’t the first time Durant has put forward such polarizing opinions, as he’s used social media platforms to do so several times in the past. Nonetheless, there’s no doubt that the Golden State Warriors will honor Durant at some point down the line for what he’s been able to do in his short stint with the team. However, Robert Horry thinks otherwise.

Former NBA champion believes Kevin Durant falls short of statue-worthy status

Speaking on a similar line to Kevin Durant’s recent deleted tweets, former NBA player and seven-time champion Robert Horry believes that, despite all the talent, KD has fallen short of statue-worthy status.

“I don’t think he gets a statue anyway, just because he didn’t stay there long enough,” Horry said on his podcast. “You think about all the players that have had statues; they were there for like 10+ years. How long was KD in OK? Like eight years?”

“You look at Dirk, you look at Kobe, you look at Magic, you look at Dream (Hakeem), look at Allen Iverson, look at Dwyane Wade – all these players that I can think about had been there for a significant amount of time. You got one MVP, you went to the Finals once, there’s not enough on paper to get you a statue,” he further added.

Indeed, Horry does make a fair point to an extent. However, even though his departure from OKC left a sour taste, he still earned seven All-NBA selections, an MVP award, and even led the franchise to the finals during his nine-year stint with them. If you don’t call that statue worthy, it’s hard to understand what it is.

Nonetheless, apart from that, both KD and Horry have made great points regarding his legacy elsewhere, namely in San Francisco. That’s because there he simply will never be held in the same regard as Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, or Draymond Green, whose time with the Dubs also seems to be limited. Still, whether or not the Warriors think so? Only time will tell.
