Luka Doncic’s box score looked strong again on Tuesday night. The conversation around him, however, quickly moved somewhere else. The Los Angeles Lakers star finished with a game-high 27 points against the New Orleans Pelicans. His 30 percent shooting from deep and seven turnovers raised some concerns, but neither statistic triggered the biggest talking point of the night.

Instead, it was a familiar habit that placed Doncic in dangerous territory with the league. The Slovenian picked up his 14th technical foul of the season during the second quarter of the Lakers’ win over New Orleans. Under NBA rules, two more technicals will trigger an automatic one-game suspension. With 21 games remaining in the regular season, that risk suddenly becomes something the Lakers must manage carefully.

Still, the timing of this technical tells a slightly different story. It was Doncic’s first technical since January 20 in Denver, suggesting the All-Star had begun controlling the behavior that often frustrates officials.

Earlier in the season, he collected 13 technical fouls in just 42 games. Since then, he has received only one across the last stretch of games. That progress matters. But the incident against the Pelicans showed the issue has not disappeared.

The technical foul came late in the second quarter with 1:17 remaining and the Lakers holding a 51-48 lead. Doncic stepped to the free-throw line and missed his first attempt. Immediately afterward, he began arguing with officials about a missed lane violation on New Orleans center DeAndre Jordan, who appeared to enter the paint early before the shot left Doncic’s hand.

Replay suggested the complaint had merit. Jordan was indeed inside the lane early. Doncic made his second free throw moments later. However, the conversation with the referee did not stop there. The Lakers star continued voicing his frustration, which eventually led to the technical foul being called.

Austin Reaves stepped in to hold Doncic back as the argument escalated. The sequence spread quickly across social media after the game, showing the entire exchange from the missed free throw to the technical foul call.

Tuesday night provided another example. A Pelicans broadcaster voiced that frustration during the game broadcast, pointing out the contradiction between Doncic’s frequent trips to the free-throw line and his continued complaints.

“This is the frustrating part about Luka, as great as he is, and he is great, you lead the NBA in free throw attempts. So you complain when they call it, you complain when they don’t call it, like, it comes to a point where sometimes you just gotta play!”
