Ever since Nico Harrison traded Luka Doncic to the Lakers, one chant has been echoing through the city of Dallas – FIRE NICO! Despite the massive backlash and reported death threats, the Mavs GM has constantly backed his decision, claiming to have “no regrets.” But his demeanor looked a bit different tonight.
Witnessing his team’s chaotic season come to an end with an embarrassing blowout loss against the Grizzlies, Nico was caught giving a concerned side-eye on Live TV. Adding more context to the visual was the 103-88 score favoring the Grizzlies flashing right below his face. Right after, the camera switched to a hurt Anthony Davis sitting on the bench, favoring his right leg while grimacing in pain. The five-second sequence somehow summed up the entire Mavs’ season.
Moreover, it left the on-air announcers wondering about Nico’s future in Dallas. “Really interesting to watch what the Mavs do this off season with their front office, with their coaching staff, with the roster. And a lot of that may depend on how Luka and the Lakers do.” One announcer said on Live TV, suggesting that Nico’s job could be in jeopardy after the way the season panned out. Of course, owners Miriam Adelson and Patrick Dumont will be looking to make some major changes this offseason, aiming to return to title contention next year. That could mean firing Nico.

Adding salt to the GM’s wounds, another broadcaster said, “Look they made a decision to move on from arguably the most talented player to ever put a Mavericks jersey on and certainly offensively in Luka Doncic. Gut punch to the fanbase and now as you said you gotta sit back with the Mavericks most likely now here gonna be home and watch what kind of a run Luka and the Lakers can go on this postseason.”
Yes, while the Mavs’ season is over, Luka Doncic and Co. will begin their playoff journey tomorrow against the Timberwolves. And the farther they go, the more uncertain Nico’s future becomes because Lakers’ success will prove that he made the wrong call by letting Luka go.
Sure enough, that would be the ultimate revenge for the Slovenian star whose dream of staying a Mavs lifer was shattered by Nico’s one call. Amid all the chaos, the GM surprisingly remains hopeful about keeping his job.
Nico Harrison intends to finish out his Mavs contract as he relies on his past success as GM
During a recent interview, Nico seemed pretty confident about staying with the Mavs. He still has three years left on his deal, and he claimed, “I see myself finishing it out. In terms of Dallas, this is our home. My family, they’re going to finish school here. This is where we live. This is where I’m living.”

Is trading Luka Doncic the worst decision in Mavericks history, or will time prove Nico right?

Although his decision to pick AD over Luka has been deemed a massive failure by everyone based on the Mavs’ early exit, the GM has faith that things will eventually fall into place, “The team post-trade that was intended to be on the floor… that’s a championship-caliber team… Every trade I’ve made since I’ve been here has not been regarded as a good trade. Sometimes, it takes time.”
Backing his point, he reminded everyone of the Kyrie Irving trade that he pulled off a couple of years ago. He acquired the former champ when not many teams wanted him because of his failure in Brooklyn and off-court controversies for his alleged anti-semitic remarks.

This move turned out to be a game-changer in the Mavericks’ march to the NBA Finals. By bringing in Kyrie Irving, Dallas got exactly what they were missing—elite shot creation, clutch scoring, and a calm, veteran presence who’s been through the fire before.
Nico Harrison made a bold call when he decided to move on from Kristaps Porzingis. Between the injury concerns and the awkward on-court fit with Luka, the writing was on the wall. But it wasn’t just about basketball—the trade also cleared Porzingis’s massive contract off the books, giving the Mavericks some much-needed financial breathing room and future flexibility.
Harrison didn’t stop there. He doubled down on the defensive side by trading for Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington, bringing in toughness, rim protection, and versatility to the frontcourt. The message was loud and clear: defense wins championships. And it showed. The Mavericks became a much grittier, more balanced squad, with those additions playing a key role in their deep playoff run.

And let’s not forget the draft. The selections of Dereck Lively II and Olivier-Maxence Prosper may not have made massive headlines on Day 1, but both picks were calculated and smart. Defensive-minded, athletic, and ready to fill gaps in the rotation—just what Dallas needed.
Bottom line? Harrison built this roster with purpose. Nico believes the AD move holds the same potential. But the Mavs ownership might not be patient enough to wait for the results, considering the ongoing trend in the league. After Wednesday’s loss, the Kings fired their GM Monte McNair within hours of elimination. That’s how quickly teams act these days. So, Nico’s future is not safe even if he believes otherwise.
