Brian Windhorst revealed insights on Harden’s latest 3-year, $97 million extension with the Cavs. “He (James Harden), from what I understand, like and I assume Donovan Mitchell was too. I haven’t heard this, but he recruited Peyton Watson,” Windhorst shared on The Hoop Collective podcast.

“He was on the, I guess, at the Fanatics Fest. At the Javits Center. They were both there and, like, at that time, the Cavs were recruiting Watson, and Harden was with him and recruited him,” the ESPN analyst elaborated. “Watson is from LA, and Harden is from LA, and they had some connection there even though they’re, I think, 13 years apart. And so the bill came due.”

The Cleveland Cavaliers landed Peyton Watson through a five-team sign-and-trade, giving him a four-year, $88 million deal. They sent Max Struss to the LA Clippers and draft picks to Denver. The move gives them an answer on the wing after years of searching for one. However, the true convincing happened behind closed doors.

Looks like James Harden felt a sense of assurance after talking to the 23-year-old in New York City. And therefore, he let go of the player option, thus making space for the Cavs to trade for Watson.

Meanwhile, Peyton averaged 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game with the Nuggets. His length, athleticism, and defensive versatility should open lineup options. Moreover, Cleveland can now build around a two-way presence while chasing goals in the Eastern Conference.

James Harden’s latest contract with the Cavaliers

Shams Charania reported Thursday that 36-year-old James Harden will stay with the Cleveland Cavaliers on a three-year, $97 million contract. It carries a player option for 2028-29 and a trade kicker. Once signed, Harden’s career income will reach $511 million, making him the fourth player past $500 million after LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry.

When James Harden declined his $42.3 million player option, the option itself was only partially guaranteed, at roughly $13 million, not fully guaranteed. Cleveland was nevertheless expected to retain Harden, and he later agreed to a fully guaranteed three-year, $97 million contract that gave the Cavaliers greater short-term salary flexibility.

“But the truth is, the Cavs weren’t going to cut him,” Brian Windhorst shared.

“He’s their franchise point guard. So if he had opted into that contract, they would have paid him the $43 million. He was getting the money. So James Harden was willing to opt out of that contract and sit around all summer and basically pick up the phone whenever the Cavs called,” Windy shared. “Calling his agents more than anything, and say, ‘Yeah, I’ll go down a little farther. I’ll go down a little farther.’ And so as the Cavs made various moves, Harden not only was willing to reduce his salary, but he was willing to recruit.”

Simply put, the Cleveland Cavaliers succeeded in maintaining balance on both sides. They retained James Harden and also acquired Peyton Watson. In the end, they emerged with a win-win situation.
