The issue of dual ownership

The WNBA is focused on expanding the level of competition in the league. For that, they are introducing new teams to the league. Until four days ago, there were 12 teams participating in the league. Recently, an addition has been made and the franchise will be based in the Bay Area.

The 13th team in the WNBA is surely a good decision for the league, however, there are some issues in the way things are being managed. Larry Gottesdiener, the managing partner of the Atlanta Dream, recently explained what is wrong with these deals being made.

The Bay Area team, which is scheduled to be in action from 2025, will be operated by the same owners as the Golden State Warriors. Although this is nothing new, Gottesdiener believes that it will create a conflict of interest. He said that managing two teams at the same time will hinder growth as the major focus will always be on the team that generates more money for the owners. Additionally, he also said that in order for one team to succeed in the WNBA, it will require 100% focus and that cannot be achieved with dual ownership.
