Any move can change your life. Whether in life or on the court, that applies in both places. But you’ve seen what a move did to Luka Doncic, right? The man was crying rivers on his return to the American Airlines Center as a Laker. So that should give you an idea. But there’s a brand new trade, which while not of the same profile, is making waves across the NBA. And by the looks of it, Desmond Bane is completely unfazed by the whole ordeal.
When Shams Charania broke the news of Bane’s trade to Orlando, everyone was caught off guard. From a Memphis perspective, losing their best player after Ja Morant might not seem to be the best proposition. But what did was who (and more importantly what) they got in exchange. Getting Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four unprotected first-round picks, and one first-round pick swap is more than they can ask for.
But Bane’s concern was more towards bigger life matters. The world celebrated Father’s Day on June 15th, the day Bane’s world shifted to the West. But nevermind packing up for a move to Tennessee, Bane’s celebrating Father’s Day too. He put up an Instagram story a couple hours after the news broke, seen chilling with his family on a beach. Oh, the tell-all was the caption: “HAPPY FATHER’S DAY TO ALL THE ACTIVE FATHERS🔒💙.”

Bane might be focussed on life’s bigger things, but The Grizz have a lot on their hands now. They have the capacity now. Immediately, the focus shifts to the future. A stroke of genius from Zach Kleiman gave them that upper hand to load their team with more talent than they can imagine. But how does that way go? Does a total overhaul make sense? If so, depression rates in Memphis will skyrocket.
How Desmond Bane’s trade affects Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr.
Oh this is showing reminiscence of the Luka Doncic trade. This trade is Bane virtually saying “Goodbye, but this isn’t good riddance.” Come the 2025-26 season, Desmond’s return to the FedEx Forum could make hearts bleed with an Avengers-type core of Franz Wagner, Paolo Banchero, Jalen Suggs, and Bane himself. But that isn’t the end of it all.

On the other hand, a wild idea thrown on X suggests the Grizzlies can even put Morant and JJJ on the market. “If I’m the Grizzlies I’d consider blowing it up completely now. Trade Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson to the highest bidders. Tank in 2026 for this loaded draft class,” said Kevin O’ Connor on the TL.
This wouldn’t be the wildest idea to work out in the NBA ever, but will take guts to execute. O’Connor did say this is just an idea, though. “I’m not saying I would, to be clear. Just that I’d consider it. Depends on returns from other teams. And depends on what the Grizzlies could get to help this existing core. Point is Memphis is in the middle right now. Let’s see what direction they go.”

If it works on machines, you just never know how the Memphis reboot might look like 3 years down the line. Desmond Bane’s trade may just mean that the clock is ticking for Morant and co. as well. In either case, Memphis has the resources to enter the future with their head high, now.
