Damian Lillard’s abrupt departure from Milwaukee has left everyone concerned about the sharpshooter’s current state. While he was still recovering from the season-ending Achilles injury he suffered during the playoffs, Bucks shockingly waived him despite the two years left on his contract. But looks like there is no need to feel bad for Dame because Bucks’ decision might have been the best-case scenario for him.

Finally breaking silence on the sudden waiver, Lillard shared a video on his Instagram story of an analyst explaining how this situation benefits the veteran guard. “He’s reportedly elated that the Bucks cut him because it put him in a spot that very few All-Star level players if any have experienced in league history.” The analyst remarked.

While Lillard is no longer part of the Bucks roster, he will continue to get paid the $112.6 million left on his contract over the next five years due to the unique waive and stretch clause. That means he will rake in over $22.5 million annually for the remainder of this decade. Meanwhile, Dame is free to join any interested team, who he believes gives him the best chance to win a title. And because of the secured paycheck from Milwaukee, money is no longer an issue as he selects his next destination.

So, Lillard could join a contender on a mid-level exception, as the analyst highlighted that he would be “able to fit into a team that wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford him.” Moreover, there is no rush for the nine-time All-Star to make his decision.

He could wait weeks, even months to decide his next destination as he is expected to be sidelined for majority of next season recovering from the Achilles injury. Dame has a lot of time to analyze which team best fulfills his title aspirations while he plans to use this free period to spend quality time with his family in Portland. Looks like the waiver was a blessing in disguise for Lillard and he knows it, as hinted by his IG story. But while he seems in no rush, teams are lining up, hoping to acquire him.

Warriors emerge as potential suitors to land Damian Lillard as Bucks waiver sparks interest among several teams

Whenever Dame decides to join a new team, he will have a lot of options to choose from. Per veteran insider Marc J. Spears, double digit teams have called to inquire about the sharpshooter’s availability. Despite his age, he is still playing at a high level. This season, Lillard averaged 24.9 points and over seven assists before injuries sidelined him. Although he is not expected to return before the All-Star break, teams want to add him to their roster right away, especially at the expected economical price. Warriors are among the interested teams.

According to Miami Herald veteran Barry Jackson, “Golden State is interested in bringing Lillard back to his hometown region (the Bay Area), ESPN reports tonight.” Playing close to his hometown of Oakland and joining forces with superstars like Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler could be major motivation for Lillard to sign with the Warriors. It would give him a great chance to win his first title.

Meanwhile, there is also reported interest from Heat, but they do not have a vacant roster spot at the moment. Pat Riley would need to make some adjustments to add Dame to his squad. Lillard clearly has some big decisions to make in the coming months, but he seemingly plans to take complete advantage of this unique opportunity provided by the Bucks. Where do you think Lillard should land next?
